Trump to impose tariffs on Canada, Mexico and China on Saturday, White House says

Prices for goods entering the United States from Canada and Mexico may increase as a result of President Donald Trump's announcement on Friday that he would apply a 25% tariff on goods from both nations and a 10% tariff on goods from China on Saturday. Prior to declaring on Inauguration Day that the tariffs will be implemented on February 1, Trump had stated that he would impose them on the first day of his term. On Friday, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt assured reporters that Trump will meet the deadline of February 1. Trump claimed that the duties were imposed in reaction to the introduction of fentanyl into the United States and because the U.S. has a trade deficit with the three nations, and that there was nothing the three nations could do to avoid them. Because it purch...

Trans pilot shares ‘proof of life’ video amid false claims she flew helicopter in D.C. crash

To dispel social media claims that she was piloting the helicopter that crashed into a commercial flight near Reagan National Airport on Wednesday night, killing 67 people, a transgender military pilot shared a "proof of life" video on Friday. In the Facebook video, Jo Ellis, a Black Hawk pilot with the Virginia Army National Guard, stated, "I understand some people have associated me with the crash in D.C., and that is false." "Tying this to a political agenda of any kind is offensive to the families. They're not worthy of that. I'm not worthy of this. And I hope that everyone is aware that I am still alive and well. This should put a stop to all the speculations. Ellis posted a screenshot of an X post on Facebook a few hours before the film was uploaded. In the post, someone had shared t...

Scuba, skydiving and golf: Black adults embrace sports that defy stereotypes and bring joy

Tonya Parker didn't want to fill her life with any more activities. She worked as a flight attendant and took ballet and yoga classes on a daily basis. Nor was she looking for new acquaintances. She had plenty, having graduated from Atlanta's Spelman College. Parker believed that her life was complete because she had two adult children who made her proud. The Covid-19 epidemic introduced her to golf, a sport she had previously dismissed as uninteresting. She accepted invitations to a few golf outings. She had trouble. However, one day Parker started taking lessons in secret because she was sick of her friends making fun of her golf skills. Her friends soon realized that she was doing better. She also became aware of her own increasing interest in the sport. Parker remarked, "I never imagin...

Head of FBI Washington Field Office is forced out

Washington As part of an unprecedented purge of top executives at FBI headquarters and leadership in FBI field offices across the nation, two senior law enforcement sources say that David Sundberg, the assistant director in charge of the FBI Washington Field Office, was informed Thursday that he would lose his job and is getting ready to leave the bureau. During Trump's second term, Sundberg became the highest-ranking field agent to be dismissed from the FBI. In December 2022, then-FBI Director Christopher Wray appointed Sundberg, who had joined the agency in 2002, to lead the Washington Field Office. It is among the most prestigious roles an agent may hold inside the FBI. Former Special Counsel Jack Smith's investigations into now-President Donald Trump and the extensive investigation i...

New York doctor indicted for prescribing abortion pill in Louisiana

Louisiana's Baton Rouge. A Louisiana grand jury on Friday indicted a New York physician for allegedly prescribing an abortion pill online in the Deep South state, which has one of the nation's most stringent near-total abortion prohibitions. Dr. Margaret Carpenter, her company, Nightingale Medical, PC, and a third party were indicted by grand jurors at the District Court for the Parish of West Baton Rouge. A felony charge of criminal abortion by means of abortion-inducing medications was brought against all three. At least since the U.S. Supreme Court reversed Roe v. Wade in 2022 and allowed states to enact stringent anti-abortion legislation, the case seems to be the first time a doctor has been charged with a crime for allegedly shipping abortion pills to another state. In December, th...

Amid blood shortage, major blood bank cancels appointments after cyberattack

Following a cyberattack, the New York Blood Center, one of the biggest nonprofit blood donation and distribution facilities in the nation, has canceled blood drives and appointments. The blood center claimed in a statement put to its website on Wednesday that ransomware was used by hackers to assault it on Sunday, severely impairing its ability to operate. Although donors are being warned to anticipate longer wait times, the organization is still taking blood donations. There is no projected timeline for when it will resume full operations. According to America's Blood Centers, a nonprofit organization that advocates for blood donation facilities nationwide, 60% of the nation's blood supply comes from independent blood suppliers like the blood center, which is the biggest in the New York C...

Crash investigators looking at altitude, communication and staffing before helicopter collision with plane

Although the cause of Wednesday night's catastrophic collision between an Army Black Hawk helicopter and an American Airlines airliner over the Potomac River is still unknown, some issues are starting to surface, such as the military chopper's height. Investigators continue to gather evidence from the Potomac, examining everything from recently recovered flight data to material from the cockpit voice recorder. The deadliest U.S. air crash since 2001 claimed the lives of all 64 passengers on American Airlines Flight 5342 as well as the three personnel on the helicopter in a firestorm impact near Reagan National Airport in Washington. Just before 9 p.m. ET on Wednesday, the PSA Airlines Bombardier CRJ-700 crashed with the helicopter while making its final approach into Reagan National's Runw...
