What to know today is as follows.

President Biden pardons his son Hunter

Despite his repeated declarations that he would not use his administrative authority to shorten his sentence or pardon his son Hunter, President Joe Biden has granted him a pardon.

Hunter Biden’s sentencing for his conviction on federal gun crimes was set for December 12. In a different criminal case, he entered a guilty plea to federal tax evasion charges and was scheduled to be sentenced on December 16. The president decided to pardon his son over the weekend and started telling his closest aides about it, a senior White House official told NBC News.

I support the legal system, but after struggling with this, I also think that raw politics have tainted it and caused a miscarriage of justice. I decided this weekend that there was no point in further postponing it. In his comments, Biden expressed his hope that Americans would get the reasoning behind a father and a president’s decision.

Hunter Biden stated in a different statement that he had acknowledged and accepted responsibility for my sins during the worst of my addiction, which were used to shame and publicly humiliate me and my family for political purposes.

The first criminal trial involving a sitting president’s kid took place in June for Hunter Biden. His father was running for re-election, and a pardon after that trial would have sparked a political firestorm for him. As his time in the White House draws to a close and he has no more elections to contend with, Biden is utilizing his pardon authority to make sure Hunter Biden does not serve time in prison.

Arctic blast slams northern U.S., disrupting post-Thanksgiving travel

As millions of travelers made their way home from their Thanksgiving destinations, an Arctic blast brought snow, frost, and dangerously cold winds to the Great Lakes, the Midwest, and the northern Plains.

Winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories are in effect for nearly 2.3 million people in portions of West Virginia, Michigan, Minnesota, and New York state. Governor Kathy Hochul of New York proclaimed a state of emergency in many counties, including Allegany, Oswego, and Erie. According to Hochul’s administration, people in western and northern New York can anticipate 1 to 4 inches of lake effect snow every hour until Monday. Hochul cautioned New Yorkers against needless travel. In order to assist local communities, over 100 National Guard personnel were stationed in western New York, she stated in a statement.

A prolonged duration of below-freezing temperatures is anticipated today, according to the warnings, and frost advisories indicate that the cold may endanger vegetation. Throughout the week, temperatures in the Central and Eastern United States will typically remain at or below freezing.

The sun is at its solar maximum which means more auroras are likely in store

With massive flares shooting off the surface and spitting streamers of plasma and charged particles into space, Earth’s star is exhibiting increased activity. Our world has been targeted by a number of solar storms. Experts say that the sun’s recent spurts of activity, which follow years of relative quiet and tranquility, are a clear indication that the star has entered a busy phase of its natural cycle: solar maximum.

This year, skywatchers as far south as Texas and Alabama were taken aback by two powerful solar storms that occurred in May and early October, respectively, painting the night skies in vivid shades of pink, green, and purple. According to NASA, the May incident was the most powerful geomagnetic storm to strike Earth in 20 years.

More than any other man-made object in history, the spacecraft is headed to fly within 3.86 million miles of the solar surface. More solar storms and breathtaking auroras may be in store as the active phase is expected to last for the upcoming year.

NFL Week 12: Josh Allen makes NFL history and a big day for Steelers QB Russell Wilson

Russell Wilson, the quarterback for the Steelers, had a tremendous day during Sunday Night Football. However, the 49ers are concerned that Christian McCaffrey’s knee injury in the game against the Bills would finish his season. Greg Rosenstein, sport editor for NBC News, highlights the highlights:

The Bills improved to 10-2, winning their sixth consecutive game in snow-covered Buffalo. In the same game, Josh Allen became the first quarterback in NFL history to run for a touchdown, catch a touchdown, and pass for a touchdown. Yes, you read correctly. He was given credit for both a passing and receiving score on one of his scores, which was a toss to Amari Cooper that was lateralized back to Allen, who ran it into the end zone. San Francisco fell to 5-7 on the season as Buffalo defeated them 35-10.

The most games ever decided in a single week in NFL history—twelve—were decided by seven points or fewer. The game-winning play in three of those victories—against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Minnesota Vikings, and the Indianapolis Colts—occurred in the last minute of overtime or the fourth quarter.

On the road, the Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Cincinnati Bengals 44-38. With a game-changing performance, quarterback Russell Wilson led his side to a 9-3 victory by throwing for 414 yards and three touchdowns. Cincinnati is only 4-8 despite being a playoff contender going into the season.

Late in the first half of the Jacksonville Jaguars’ eventual 23–20 loss to the Houston Texans, quarterback Trevor Lawrence was taken off the field due to a head injury. He was tumbling and racing for a first down when he was hit by Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair. Al-Shaair’s illegal hit resulted in his ejection. Later, Lawrence posted on social media that he was doing better and was back at home.

Native Hawaiian homeowners hit another breaking point

Longtime Lahaina residents who have exhausted all available resources in the wake of the wildfires are faced with a difficult decision: either leave the only house they have ever known or find a way to stay. Both seem unattainable.

The insurance-covered rental aid for a large number of Lahaina homeowners ended in October. They are currently experiencing a number of hardships, with some individuals having to pay for their rent, mortgages, and rebuilding expenses that their insurance no longer covers. Last month, editor Jessica Machado visited Lahaina to speak with native Hawaiian homeowners who are having a hard time deciding what to do next.
