Washington In a new interview released on Wednesday, President Joe Biden stated that while he is unsure whether he could have served a full second term, he still thinks he could have defeated President-elect Donald Trump in the 2024 race.
In a lengthy interview with USA Today, Biden responded, “I think yes, but it’s presumptuous to say that,” when asked if he could have won if he hadn’t left the campaign in July.
According to USA Today, Biden stated that he still believes he might have won the election based of the polls he had examined. But he wasn’t sure he could have been in office for a second term. “I’m not sure,” he said.
According to some surveys, Biden was either in a dead heat or trailing Trump in the 2024 campaign before he abruptly withdrew in July.
“While it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” Biden stated when he announced his decision to withdraw.
In a primetime speech, Biden explained his decision to support Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic Party’s 2024 presidential contender, saying that he believed “the best way forward is to pass the torch to a new generation.”
Following weeks of mounting pressure from party officials, notably former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., to withdraw from the presidential campaign, he made his decision. Following Biden’s dismal debate performance in late June, which raised doubts about his age, health, and cognitive ability, there was an increasing uprising.
Later, other Democrats said they hoped Biden had chosen not to run for reelection, or at the very least, to withdraw from the race much sooner.
As he told USA Today, Biden believes that “the only advantage of being an old guy is that I’ve known every major world leader for a long time.”
He stated, “I had an opinion on each of them and their hobbies. Therefore, I believe it assisted me in navigating some of the fundamental shifts occurring in the Middle East, the Far East, Latin America, and Europe.
With 312 electoral votes to Harris’ 226 electoral votes, Trump ultimately prevailed in the election. The popular vote went to him 49.8% to 48.3%.
