Boston man charged in attack on transgender woman on a train

Authorities charged a Boston man with assault and other offenses after he allegedly kicked and punched a transgender woman during a violent train incident last month.

According to a news statement from the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, the 41-year-old woman told transit police that she was attacked at the Maverick rail station on Halloween.

According to the DA, she said that the suspect, Gregory Burnett, screamed insulting phrases at her, including “you re not a woman, you re a man,” while punching and kicking her.

According to the woman, Burnett grabbed her foot by the heel and dragged her leg as she attempted self-defense, forcing her to fall and break her wrist.

She informed transit police that she thought her gender identification was the reason behind the attack.

In a statement, District Attorney Kevin Hayden declared, “We will never tolerate anyone being subjected to abuse, much less physical attack, because of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression.” “And all our residents and visitors have the right and expectation to travel on public transportation in peace and safety.”

The Blue Line train was stopped with its doors open when the attack took place. On the train, Burnett “immediately approached her, and began shouting derogatory terms at her,” according to officials, Hayden said.

Subsequently, he allegedly “punched and kicked her.” According to the district attorney’s office, other passengers had to step in and assist in chasing Burnett away.

Using security footage and witness accounts, police were able to identify Burnett, 53, as the suspected attacker. He was charged with assault and battery with a deadly weapon, assault and battery inflicting serious bodily injury, and civil rights violation with injury after being taken into custody on November 12. It’s unclear if he has legal representation.
