Buffalo Gunman Sentenced for Fatal Shooting During Attempted Burglary

(WNY News Now) A Buffalo man who shot and killed a victim during a failed break-in in the Kensington neighborhood will serve 20 years in prison.

Buffalo, New York Levon Dickson, 50, admitted to killing a man during an attempted burglary earlier this year and was given a 20-year prison sentence with an additional five-year post-release supervision. Justice M. William Boller of the State Supreme Court imposed the sentence.

On the evening of February 7, 2024, Buffalo Police were called to the 300 block of Warwick Avenue in response to allegations of a shooting. Officers found Mitchell Reese, 60, dead from a gunshot wound on the porch of a house when they arrived. Dickson shot Reese with an illegal pistol while he was trying to break into the house, according to investigators.

In full satisfaction of the accusation against him, Dickson entered a guilty plea on October 23, 2024, to Manslaughter in the First Degree, a Class B serious felony.

Detective Joseph Ruggierio, Detective Christopher Sterlace, and Detective Jennifer Zanghi of the Buffalo Police Department are commended by Acting DA Keane for their efforts on this case.

Chief Noha A. Elnakib of the Raise the Age/Motor Vehicle Theft Insurance Fraud Unit and Assistant District Attorney Justin H. Caldwell of the Homicide Bureau prosecuted the case.
