According to Fresno police this week, a boyfriend of a lady in California was arrested after she was shot dead by her 2-year-old toddler. The boyfriend is accused of not properly storing the weapon.
The 22-year-old Jessinya Mina passed away on Friday after being shot once in the upper body while in bed at an apartment in the 5200 block of North Fresno Street, according to a press conference held by Fresno police Lt. Paul Cervantes on Tuesday.
Cervantes described the incident as an avoidable tragedy.
According to Cervantes, the child was able to control the trigger while handling the specific weapon since it was kept in a place where the toddler could reach it.
Andrew Sanchez, Mina’s 18-year-old boyfriend, told authorities that he was the reason the 2-year-old toddler discovered the 9 mm gun. According to the police, Mina gave birth to an 8-month-old baby.
Sanchez was arrested on felony accusations of criminal firearm storage and child endangerment, according to a statement from the police.
According to Cervantes, Sanchez, who has no criminal history and tried to drive his injured partner to the hospital, has since bailed out of jail.
On Wednesday, it was unclear if Sanchez had hired legal counsel.
According to Cervantes, the investigation is still underway, and officers are discussing potential charges with the county prosecutors.
On Wednesday afternoon, prosecutors were not immediately contacted for a case update.
Cervantes stated that the incident serves as a sobering warning to gun owners to be careful about where they keep their weapons.
The Fresno Police Department is really grieved by this kind of tragedy, which is heartbreaking and undoubtedly serves as a clear reminder of how important it is to be able to store your weapon correctly and in a way that prevents youngsters from accessing it,” he said.
No one from Mina’s family was contacted for comment right away.
