Wildfires rage across the Northeast as 27 million people remain under fire alerts

Wind gusts and humidity are helping to fuel wildfires burning across the Northeast. A whopping 27 million people from New York to Massachusetts are under fire alerts Saturday afternoon. Cities under fire alerts include New York City and Boston, where wind gusts up to 35 mph and relative humidity of around 25% to 30% is expected. Vegetation in the area also remains very dry, with this region of the country about 6 to 8 inches behind on rainfall since Sept. 1. A cold front is expected to pass through the region Sunday, bringing up to 1 inch of rain. Trump has promised lower interest rates. That will be largely out of his control.

WASHINGTON — As a candidate, Donald Trump promised to relieve consumers of high interest rates. As president, doing so will likely be a slow process largely outside of his control. Trump repeatedly said during the campaign that he would bring down interest rates without elaborating on how. He has suggested the president should have a say in determining rates set by the Federal Reserve and publicly berated the central bank and its chairman, Jerome Powell, for not lowering rates sooner. But while Trump has put a lot of emphasis on the Federal Reserve as a way to reduce the interest paid by consumers or businesses, the rates on mortgages and other longer-term loans are outside of any one person’s or institution’s control. Instead, those rates are largely determined by the bond market, w...

Two women were arrested on Friday in connection with the murder of a photographer that was partially livestreamed on social media, police in Florida said. Lakevia Davonna Pringle, 31, and Savon Chantay Tyler, 35, were taken into custody and charged in the death of Lauren Ashley Martin, a photographer who was shot and killed Tuesday night outside of a home in Sanford following an argument. See Pesto the viral baby penguin grow up as he sheds brown feathers in new photos

Pesto is growing up! After reaching stardom in September, the king penguin chick is beginning to shed his brown feathers in exchange for new waterproof ones as he transitions into adulthood. Pesto, who lives at the Sea Life Melbourne Aquarium in Australia, is nearing the final stages of his first molt. It’s a crucial phase in a king penguin’s life because it signifies the start of independence as they prepare to leave the colony, according to the aquarium. King penguin chicks experience their first molt around 10 months old and the process can last up to six weeks, per the aquarium. Since molting requires baby chicks to use a lot of energy, the animals often lose weight as they form their new, sleek feathers. “As Pesto sheds his juvenile feathers and develops his ...

North Korean GPS manipulation disrupted dozens of planes and vessels, South Korea says

South Korea’s military said North Korea disrupted GPS signals from border areas for the second-straight day on Saturday, affecting an unspecified number of flights and vessel operations. Tensions between the rival Koreas have escalated as North Korean leader Kim Jong Un flaunts his advancing nuclear and missile program and engages in electronic and psychological warfare, such as flying thousands of balloons to drop trash and anti-South Korean propaganda leaflets in the South. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said North Korean operations to manipulate GPS signals were detected from around the western border city of Kaesong and the nearby city of Haeju on Friday and Saturday, and said the activities disrupted dozens of civilian aircraft and several vessels. Qatar threatens Hamas with expulsion, officials say

Qatari officials have warned Hamas ’ political bureau that it was no longer welcome in the country amid frustration over stalled hostage and cease-fire negotiations with Israel , according to a senior U.S. administration official and two diplomats briefed on the matter. “Qatar has become increasingly frustrated with a lack of progress toward a cease-fire by both Hamas and Israel ,” one of the diplomats told NBC News Saturday morning. “Hamas has been told that if this continues then Qatar cannot continue to host them,” they said. Later, a diplomat added that Qatar had informed the Israelis and Hamas that "as long as there is a refusal to negotiate a deal in good faith, they cannot continue to mediate. As a consequence, the Hamas political office no longer serve...
