Husband of missing San Antonio mom is charged with her murder

The husband of a San Antonio woman who has been missing for a month has been charged with murder. Brad Simpson is charged in the death of Suzanne Simpson , 51, a mother of four who was last seen outside her home in San Antonio on Oct. 7 by her neighbor, officials have said. Authorities have not publicly announced that Suzanne Simpson's body has been found. In a news conference Friday afternoon, Olmos Park Police Chief Fidel Villegas said the case has been turned over to the Bexar County Criminal District Attorney's Office. Villegas did not provide any details on what evidence law enforcement has gathered that led to the murder charge against Brad Simpson. Rep. Jared Moskowitz says police alerted him about a ‘potential threat’ on his life

Rep. Jared Moskowitz of Florida said Friday that police notified him this week about an arrest in connection with a “potential threat on my life” in his district, which covers parts of Broward and Palm Beach counties. Moskowitz, a Democrat, said in the Friday s tatement that the Margate Police Department notified him about an alleged “potential plot” on his life on Monday, a day before Tuesday’s general election. “I am deeply worried about congressional member security and the significant lack thereof when we are in the district,” Moskowitz said. “Regardless of our political affiliations or differences, we all have families we want to keep safe.” Margate police confirmed on Friday that officers had arrested 41-year-old John Lapinski of Margate in connection with the in...

Democratic governors vow to protect their states from Trump and his policies

A cadre of blue-state governors is already preparing a litany of political and legal moves to shield their states’ policies and residents from federal actions under Donald Trump's new administration. The plans from Democratic governors across the country — including a handful of potential 2028 presidential contenders — offer both a repeat of how leaders of liberal states pushed back against Trump during his first term, as well as a snapshot of what the resistance to him from the left will look like this time around. In California, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Thursday that he would convene a special session of the Legislature explicitly intended to “safeguard California values and fundamental rights in the face of an incoming Trump administration.” In a news release, h...

Justice Department says Mississippi Senate paid a Black attorney less than her white colleagues for years

The Department of Justice sued the Mississippi Senate on Friday, alleging that it discriminated against a Black employee for years by paying her "significantly less" than her white colleagues. The DOJ said the state Senate’s Legal Services Office paid a Black staff attorney about half the salary of her white peers, in violation of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The lawsuit said Kristie Metcalfe, who has since left her job, received compensation well below that of her white co-workers. Before Metcalfe’s hiring, the office had only employed white attorneys. “Discriminatory employment practices, like paying a Black employee less than their white colleagues for the same work, are not only unfair, they are unlawful,” said Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke of...

Elon Musk briefly joins Trump’s call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy

WASHINGTON — Tech mogul Elon Musk briefly joined President-elect Donald Trump 's phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Wednesday, according to a source familiar with the matter. Musk, who campaigned for Trump in the final weeks of the 2024 race, was not scheduled to be on the call but walked into the room and greeted Zelenskyy, according to the source. He was not part of a substantive conversation between the two leaders, the person said. Neither Zelenskyy nor Trump had previously disclosed that Musk was on the call. Axios first reported his participation, which was confirmed by other outlets. Trump transition team officials declined requests for comment Friday. Neither Musk nor the Ukrainian Embassy in Washington, D.C., immediately respon...

Trump’s legal allies set the stage for DOJ investigations of adversaries

A firebrand legal adviser to the president-elect and a conservative lawyer under consideration for the post of attorney general appear to be setting the stage for investigations and prosecutions of Donald Trump’s legal adversaries, including special counsel Jack Smith and New York Attorney General Letitia James. The threats come as Trump campaign aides say that the president-elect considers his choice for attorney general to be his most important single appointment. Over the last several days, Mike Davis, an outspoken conservative lawyer who is advising the Trump transition on Justice Department issues, has said in interviews that Smith belongs in prison and that James could be prosecuted. “I dare you to try to continue your lawfare against President Trump in his second term,” Dav...

Election betting platforms brought in billions of dollars as users around the world wagered on who would win Tuesday’s U.S. presidential election, according to an NBC News analysis of betting platforms.
