Senate braces for ‘train wreck’ as hearings kick off for Trump Cabinet picks

Washington In an effort to approve President-elect Donald Trump's Cabinet choices as soon as possible after his inauguration on January 20, the Republican-controlled Senate is scheduled to hold more than a dozen hearings this week. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., for secretary of state, is one of the nominees that is expected to have an easy time getting confirmed. Other nominees, like former Fox News host Pete Hegseth, a veteran of the military, for defense secretary, are facing obstacles and need the hearings to garner support. Sen. John Cornyn, a Republican from Texas, told reporters last week that the confirmation hearings next week will be a bit of a train wreck. However, I'm happy that those are being completed, and the FBI background check would logically be a component of that procedu...

Fired U.S. Center for SafeSport investigator arrested on new charges

DENVER Rape and sex trafficking charges have been brought against an ex-cop who was sacked from his position as an investigator at the U.S. Center for SafeSport for allegedly diverting money taken from a cocaine investigation. According to a news release from the district attorney's office, Jason Krasley, a former Allentown, Pennsylvania, police officer, was arrested Friday and charged with felony rape and involuntary sexual servitude for alleged crimes committed during his tenure on the department from 2011 to 2015. Krasley left the department in 2021 to work for the SafeSport Center, where he was fired last year soon after it was revealed that he had been jailed for allegedly taking $5,500 from a cocaine bust he assisted in while on the force. The recent arrest raises the question of h...

NFL playoffs: Commanders beat the Buccaneers 23-20 with a last-second field goal off the upright

It should have been a stressful occasion. Washington had a chance to win the game despite facing third-and-one while traveling for the NFL playoffs. However, Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels was observed chuckling on the field while conversing with Tampa Bay defenders across the line of scrimmage during a brief pause in play with just 55 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Daniels has had a terrific first season and has not seemed to mind a large stage. Daniels has consistently delivered in unexpected ways that belie his inexperience, from his Hail Mary touchdown to defeat Chicago to his 12 touchdown passes in the fourth quarter and overtime, the most ever by a rookie quarterback. In Tampa Bay, that continued on Sunday. After slugging it out with the Buccaneers defense, Daniels made...

Dazzling Ice Castles draw tourists to New Hampshire, other states

N.H.'s North Woodstock. In New Hampshire and a number of other states, a yearly architectural celebration of ice has resumed. Thousands of icicles are grown, harvested, and arranged before being blasted with sprinklers to construct the towers, tunnels, archways, and caverns that make up Ice Castles, which are both temporary art pieces and tourist attractions. Since the displays were first installed in 2011, the firm that makes them has grown. It operates this year in Utah, Minnesota, and two locations in Colorado and New Hampshire, where there is an ice bar and a snow tubing hill. Officials were ecstatic that the temperatures were chilly enough to open sooner this season after a mild winter the previous year. The company's vice president for operations, Jared Henningsen, described it as ...
