Newsom says California wildfires will be one of the worst natural disasters in U.S. history

California Governor Gavin Newsom called for an impartial probe of the local water system and stated that the flames in the Los Angeles area will rank among the worst natural disasters in American history during an appearance on NBC News Meet the Press on Saturday. When asked if the tragedy would rank among the worst in the country's history, Newsom responded, "I think it will be in terms of just the costs associated with it, in terms of the scale and scope." His comments followed reports from firefighters fighting fires throughout greater Los Angeles on Wednesday that several fire hydrants ran dry in the first few hours. Was it simply too much? We drew it down since you had so much that was used? Were pipes involved? Was there electricity? Were pumps, pipes, and electricity all involved? W...

Educators worry about how to talk immigration with families facing mass deportations

Melanie Claros, a civics teacher and ESL coordinator at a South Florida school where half of the kids are Latino, had to perform an additional task the morning after Election Day last year. She recently told NBC News that by the end of the day, over two dozen kids had individually come to her to inquire about immigration enforcement reforms in anticipation of another Donald Trump administration. Will they deport us all at this point? Who will be the first to be deported? She remembered being questioned by students in class. Since then, Claros said, the worries have not decreased, adding that she is aware of at least one student who has already ceased attending classes due to immigration-related issues. "I have a strong suspicion that we will have more children who will become withdraw...

Gov. Gavin Newsom slams Trump’s disinformation about California wildfires

In a Saturday interview with NBC News Meet the Press, California Governor Gavin Newsom attacked President-elect Donald Trump's handling of the California wildfires, stating, "I don't think mis- and disinformation advantages or aids any of us." Since the fires started Tuesday, Trump has been attacking Newsom, President Joe Biden, and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass on Truth Social, which Newsom seemed to be referencing. The president-elect falsely stated in one post that Newsom had obstructed a bill that would have permitted water to move from Northern California to Southern California. Using a derogatory nickname for Newsom, Trump wrote that Governor Gavin Newscum refused to sign the water restoration declaration that would have permitted millions of gallons of water from excess rain and snow...
