Supreme Court leans toward upholding law that could ban TikTok

Washington On Friday, it seemed likely that the Supreme Court will maintain a legislation that would essentially outlaw the social networking app TikTok in the US. At least a preliminary ruling is expected in the coming days, if not hours, after the nine justices on the conservative-majority court heard oral arguments from attorneys for TikTok, some of its users, and the Biden administration. Even while the judges didn't seem to be persuaded by TikTok's arguments regarding free speech, there is still some doubt about the court's decision in this case, particularly since President-elect Donald Trump will take office one day after the law's effective date of January 19. Even if the court decides against TikTok, it still has the power to temporarily halt the law. In order to pursue a politi...

New Orleans police release bodycam footage of shootout with Bourbon Street attacker

Body camera footage of the gunfight between three cops and the assailant who crashed his truck into pedestrians on Bourbon Street in the early hours of New Year's Day, killing fourteen people, was made public by the New Orleans Police Department on Friday. The video, which lasts for around ten seconds, shows two officers standing in front of an open driver's side door of a white pickup vehicle with their pistols drawn. Before shooting breaks out and officers and a few people flee the car, a voice can be heard saying, "Put your hands up." Along with a still photo that purports to be a muzzle flash from the assailant's firearm, the police department also made available a slowed-down version of the same footage. For the first time, information about the gunfight was made public, including the...

Haitians in the U.S. under temporary protection in anxious limbo amid shifting immigration policies

Since President-elect Donald Trump intends to terminate the programs and carry out mass deportations on the first day of his administration, Haitians who are already in the United States lawfully under temporary programs express fear about their ability to stay in the country. When gang violence spread throughout Port-au-Prince, the capital, and the surrounding area, Warrens Dolcine, then 23 years old, was studying political science and international relations at the Universit d tat d Ha ti. This put her and her mother in constant danger. She said that the gangs did not seize power overnight. It happened slowly. They started by working on your mind. In 2021, they began abducting people, and I was forced to often leave my home to be with my relatives. Eventually, neither my mother nor I fe...

Rudy Giuliani appearing at second of two contempt hearings in defamation case this week

Washington Rudy Giuliani's second contempt of court hearing this week in the defamation action against him involving former Georgia election workers Ruby Freeman and Wandrea Shaye Moss was hearing arguments on Friday before a federal judge. Michael Gottlieb, the women's lawyer, told U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell, "We don't want to be here today." According to him, the plaintiffs' ultimate priority is for Mr. Giuliani to cease disparaging them. Despite a court-ordered agreement that he would no longer slander the ladies, Giuliani seemed to continue to allege that they committed fraud during the 2020 election in remarks on his streaming show, which prompted the contempt complaint. Howell advised Giuliani to be aware of the impact of his words and his position. The judge declared, "You ...

Rudy Giuliani appearing at second of two contempt hearings in defamation case this week

Washington Arguments in Rudy Giuliani's second contempt of court hearing this week, which involves former Georgia election workers Ruby Freeman and Wandrea Shaye Moss, will be heard by a federal judge on Friday. Before the hearing even began, Giuliani attacked U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell, saying in a post on X that she was "making us wait all day for her inevitable highly prejudiced, usual, biased decision." Minutes before the hearing started, Giuliani wrote, "The hearing is a hypocritical waste of time and a disgusting example of Biden lawfare." Arguments are being heard by Howell over whether the former mayor of New York City and Donald Trump's attorney should face consequences for continuing to disparage Freeman and Moss on his streaming program in defiance of a court order stati...

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro is sworn in despite credible evidence of election loss

Venezuela's capital, Cairo Despite protests and strong proof that his opponent won the election, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro was inaugurated in on Friday to a third six-year term, prolonging his increasingly authoritarian rule until 2031. He was sworn in and gave a scathing address at Venezuela's legislative palace, which was tightly guarded by intelligence, military, and police personnel. In the surrounding streets and a plaza, crowds of people gathered, many of them wearing pro-Maduro T-shirts. Maduro declared that the opposition's inability to block his inauguration was a huge triumph for Venezuela and accused them of attempting to make it into a global conflict. He pledged to uphold peace and national sovereignty while accusing outside forces of targeting Venezuela, particu...
