GOP-controlled N.C. Supreme Court blocks certification of Democrat as winner of close high court race

Tuesday's ruling by the North Carolina Supreme Court prevents state authorities from accrediting the Democratic nominee as the victor of a close contest for the state's highest court. All but one Republican on the state Supreme Court voted against the North Carolina State Board of Elections recognizing the outcome of the election, in which Democratic Justice Allison Riggs leads Republican Jefferson Griffin by 734 votes, in a 4-2 decision. Riggs did not participate in Tuesday's order. The court's ruling that Riggs wants to stay on and that Griffin wants to join permits the justices to immediately consider Griffin's appeal, which aims to nullify 60,000 votes cast in November. The decision promised to resolve the matter quickly and provided a timeline that requires all case briefs to be submi...

Trump asks Supreme Court to block New York hush money sentencing

With a sentencing hearing set for Friday, President-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday requested that the Supreme Court halt criminal proceedings in his New York hush money case. In order to give the justices time to take action prior to the sentencing hearing, the court has instructed New York prosecutors to reply to Trump's request by Thursday morning. "This Court should enter an immediate stay of further proceedings in the New York trial court to prevent grave injustice and harm to the institution of the Presidency and the operations of the federal government," the attorneys for Trump stated in the latest petition. They contend that since the Supreme Court acknowledged earlier this year that Trump was covered by presidential immunity, the case should not proceed. "The Constitution, establi...

Biden says he thinks he could have beaten Trump in the 2024 election

Washington In a new interview released on Wednesday, President Joe Biden stated that while he is unsure whether he could have served a full second term, he still thinks he could have defeated President-elect Donald Trump in the 2024 race. In a lengthy interview with USA Today, Biden responded, "I think yes, but it's presumptuous to say that," when asked if he could have won if he hadn't left the campaign in July. According to USA Today, Biden stated that he still believes he might have won the election based of the polls he had examined. But he wasn't sure he could have been in office for a second term. "I'm not sure," he said. According to some surveys, Biden was either in a dead heat or trailing Trump in the 2024 campaign before he abruptly withdrew in July. "While it has been my inte...

Pakistan's Peshawar A top Taliban leader with firsthand knowledge of the conversations told NBC News on Wednesday that the Biden administration has been in discussions with the Taliban to swap Afghans in U.S. custody for Americans who are incarcerated in Afghanistan. Speaking under anonymity because he was not permitted to publicly discuss the matter, the Taliban leader claimed that despite two years of negotiations, no agreement had been reached. Muhammad Rahim, the lone Afghan prisoner still at Guant namo Bay, a Cuban detention facility for the primarily Muslim prisoners arrested worldwide in the U.S. war on terror, was among the three Afghan nationals he claimed the Taliban had demanded. Three fires grow, forcing more than 80,000 evacuations around L.A.

More than 80,000 people have been ordered to leave the Pacific Palisades, Pasadena, and Sylmar neighborhoods of Los Angeles due to three swift-moving flames and "life-threatening and destructive" winds. The Pacific Palisades Highlands community was the scene of the Palisades fire, which started Tuesday morning at around 10:30 a.m. local time. In a matter of hours, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CalFire) reported that the fire had consumed 3,000 acres. Dry weather and strong winds have been its main drivers, and they are expected to get worse over night. A minimum of 30,000 locals were compelled to leave the region. Approximately twice as much land was burnt by the Palisades fire as by the Eaton and Hurst fires in Pasadena and Sylmar, respectively, which had prev...

Italian journalist Cecilia Sala freed from Iran prison, Italy says

According to a statement released by the office of Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni on Wednesday, Italian journalist Cecilia Sala has been released from detention in Iran and is returning home via plane. Sala, 29, was arrested in Tehran on December 19 and imprisoned in solitary confinement at the renowned Evin jail in the Iranian capital. Sala had been working under a normal journalistic visa. Sala's arrest came three days after Iranian businessman Muhammad Abedini was taken into custody at Milan's Malpensa Airport on a U.S. warrant for allegedly delivering drone parts that Washington claims were used in an attack in Jordan in 2024 that killed three U.S. service members. Iran has denied having anything to do with the attack. Intense efforts on diplomatic and intelligence channels resu...
