California braces for ‘life-threatening’ windstorm and critical fire risk
A catastrophic windstorm that is expected to begin on Tuesday could cause extensive damage and a high risk of fire in Southern California, putting millions of people under a Red Flag warning. Emergency services are prepared to respond in force.
The Los Angeles metropolitan area is among the 19 million people in the region for whom a "Particularly Dangerous Situation" (PDS) Red Flag warning has been issued. "In rare situations when long-lived, strong and violent tornadoes are possible," the National Weather Service said, this type of warning is used.
It was last used during last month's Franklin Fire, which destroyed more than 4,000 acres near Malibu.
