Ex-Kentucky sheriff accused of fatally shooting judge pleads not guilty
At his arraignment on Monday, the former Letcher County, Kentucky, sheriff entered a not guilty plea to one count of public official murder.
On September 19, Mickey Stines, 43, is charged with shooting and killing District Judge Kevin Mullins, 54, in Mullins' chambers.
On Thursday, Stines was indicted by a grand jury on one count of public official murder. Stines entered a not guilty plea to a charge of first-degree murder prior to the indictment.
Judge Julia Adams made the decision to keep Stines in jail during Monday's hearing. He is being detained without bond due to security and community safety concerns, as well as the fact that he is accused of a capital felony.
According to state police, Mullins was shot many times following an altercation with Stines.
