How the lives of human smugglers surprised this award-winning author

The issue with the topic of migration, according to author and anthropologist Jason De Len, is that people "pedal these very simplistic stories and it's a very complex issue." De Le Le spent seven years meticulously examining the lives of guys who were committed to smuggling migrants into the United States from Mexico and Central America in order to investigate the problem of human smuggling. His nonfiction work, Soldiers and Kings: Survival and Hope in the World of Human Smuggling, was the outcome, and it won De Len the coveted National Book Award for nonfiction on Wednesday. In his first interview since receiving the honor, De Len told NBC News on the phone Thursday afternoon, "I'm still in pretty much in disbelief." With Matt Gaetz’s withdrawal, Trump’s ‘retribution’ campaign hits the harsh reality of governing in Washington

The obstacles President-elect Donald Trump may have in his efforts to transform his campaign of retaliation into a governing coalition that can function within the confines of Washington are exemplified by Matt Gaetz's withdrawal on Thursday as a candidate for attorney general. Few people better represent Trump's agenda of grievances and vendettas than Gaetz, a congressman from Florida until recently. Even against his own Republican leadership, he has been in the forefront of MAGA resistance in Congress and one of Trump's most pugilist advocates. Trump would at last have the devoted attorney general he thought he was lacking during his first term in Gaetz. From the time Trump startled many of Washington by announcing Gaetz as his pick eight days ago, however, it was a difficult sell. Gaetz...

Trump and Fed Chair Powell could be set on a collision course over interest rates

Depending on how the economy develops, President-elect Donald Trump and Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell may be headed for a policy clash in 2025. Powell and his colleagues may opt to halt their efforts to decrease interest rates if the economy struggles and inflation spikes up again. Trump, who criticized Powell and other Fed officials during his first time in office for not easing monetary policy swiftly enough, may become enraged by this. When asked about the possibility of a conflict, Joseph LaVorgna, who was the head economist at the National Economic Council during Trump's first term, responded without hesitation. They frequently do nothing when they are unsure of what to do. That might be an issue. Does the Fed dig its foot in if the president believes that rates should be decre...
