65-year-old cold case of dead child found on side of Wisconsin road is solved with DNA

A cold case from 1959 involving a missing 7-year-old came to a conclusion last week through DNA identification, decades after charges were dropped against the boy's adoptive parents for lack of physical evidence. A human skeleton was discovered on the side of the road in Mequon, Wisconsin, on Oct. 4, 1959, which investigators determined to be the skull of a child between the ages of 6 and 8 years old. At the same time Mequon police officers were following leads about the skull, deputies in nearby Houghton County, Michigan, were looking into the disappearance of an adopted child, Markku Jutila, whose parents fled to Chicago. Family members of William and Hilja Jutila became suspicious of the child's whereabouts after the Jutilas relocated from the Michigan area to Chicago. The Houg...

Trump’s Cabinet moves hand Ron DeSantis a gift — but possibly with strings attached

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis will have a chance to put another stamp on state politics with a big appointment if Sen. Marco Rubio becomes secretary of state. But one major question is hanging over that opportunity: How badly does President-elect Donald Trump want his daughter-in-law, Lara, to become a U.S. senator? DeSantis, like any Florida governor, has the ability to unilaterally appoint the person who would fill a vacant Senate seat, which would come into play following Trump's expected nomination of Rubio to lead the State Department on Monday. Trump could still change his mind, cautioned three sources familiar with the selection process, who said the decision wouldn't be final until the president-elect makes a formal announcement. But if Rubio's Senate s...

Wildfires burn in New York and New Jersey as red flag warnings are triggered across Northeast

Weather conditions triggered red flag warnings in the northeast part of the United States as firefighters in California continued to battle a large wildfire that has burned over 20,000 acres. Much of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut are under a red flag warning Tuesday due to dry and windy conditions. Massachusetts and Rhode Island are under the same warning, the National Weather Service in Boston said in a post on X . The agency urged people to avoid outdoor burning and activities that may produce a spark and to use caution when disposing of igniters, such as cigarettes. The warnings come as a historic drought continues to grip much of the Northeast. In New Jersey, three counties are suffering “extreme” drought and the rest of the state has severe or moderate dr...

A party, a fight, then gunfire: Witnesses to Tuskegee homecoming shooting describe a war zone on campus

As successive gunshots rang out early Sunday morning in a parking lot at Tuskegee University in Alabama, Kierra Talley thought she was going to die. Talley, a junior at Alabama State University, was visiting Tuskegee with friends to celebrate the historically Black college’s centennial homecoming celebration when, she said, chaos erupted. “It was people shooting back at each other — whether it was in the crowd, outside of the crowd, inside of a dormitory — people were shooting,” said Talley, 20, who added that she saw at least four gunmen with “heavy ARs” and guns with “switches,” a small device that turns a semiautomatic gun into a fully automatic firearm. “This wasn’t one person,” she said. “I describe it as a massacre.” One person was fatally shot in the ordeal and at least 16 ...

Trump’s tariff threats send U.S. companies scrambling for lobbyists and loopholes

In the days since President-elect Donald Trump won the presidential race , Nicole Bivens Collinson’s phone has barely stopped ringing. Collinson, who helps lead the international trade and government relations division at the lobbying firm Sandler, Travis & Rosenberg, said she is fielding “dozens and dozens and dozens” of calls from anxious U.S. companies looking to protect themselves from Trump’s hardline tariff plans by finding loopholes and exemptions. “Absolutely everyone is calling,” Collinson told CNBC. “It is nonstop.” Over the course of the 2024 campaign, Trump made universal tariffs a core tenet of his economic platform, floating a 20% tax on all imports from all countries with a specifically harsh 60% rate for Chinese goods. That hyper-protectionist ...
