Police hunt 43 monkeys that escaped from a South Carolina research facility

A police search is underway after 43 monkeys escaped from a research facility in South Carolina on Wednesday night. Police in Yemassee, in Beaufort County, said the Rhesus macaque primates escaped from Alpha Genesis, a business that provides "nonhuman primate products and bio-research services," according to its website. The monkeys are a group of "very young females" that have never been used for testing. An Alpha Genesis spokesperson confirmed to police that the animals "are too young to carry disease," police said in a statement. "Alpha Genesis currently have eyes on the primates and are working to entice them with food," police said Thursday afternoon. Traps have also been set up and officers are using thermal imaging cameras in an attempt to recapture the animals, police s...

Shane Waldron fired as Chicago Bears offensive coordinator amid team’s struggles

After much speculation, Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Shane Waldron has been fired. The team announced the decision Tuesday morning, saying Waldron has been “relieved of his duties,” just hours after head coach Matt Eberflus told reporters “adjustments and changes” would be made. “After evaluating our entire operation, I decided that it is in the best interest of our team to move in a different direction with the leadership of our offense,” Eberflus said in a statement. “This decision was well-thought-out, one that was conducted deliberately and respectfully. I would like to thank Shane for his efforts and wish him the best moving forward.” Offensive passing game coordinator Thomas Brown will step into the role. Trump expected to nominate Kristi Noem as Homeland Security secretary

President-elect Donald Trump is planning to nominate South Dakota Republican Gov. Kristi Noem to serve as the secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, according to four sources familiar with the decision. As Homeland Security secretary, Noem would oversee a number of key federal agencies including U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the U.S. Secret Service, TSA and the Coast Guard. Noem, 52, has voiced support for the president-elect's hardline immigration policies and has defended her fellow Republican governors in their efforts to crack down on migrants in their states. In January, for example, she said in remarks that there was an "invasion" at the U.S.-Mexico border and said ...

Judge in Trump hush money case delays key ruling ahead of sentencing

The judge overseeing Donald Trump's New York criminal trial delayed a key ruling Tuesday on whether the president-elect's conviction should be set aside, according to correspondence between the parties. Trump’s team wants the case dismissed, and the prosecution says it needs time to evaluate next steps now that Trump has been re-elected. The court has granted them a week's delay to provide their position. In a letter to Judge Juan Merchan , prosecutors said they agreed with Trump's request for a stay to consider how to proceed given his new status as president-elect. "The People agree that these are unprecedented circumstances and that the arguments raised by defense counsel in correspondence to the People on Friday require careful consideration to ensure that...

Every uncalled race left in the fight for control in Washington

Former President Donald Trump has clinched a second term in the White House, and his Republican Party has won control of the Senate. But control of the House of Representatives is still up for grabs, as is the size of the incoming Senate majority. In the fight for the House, Democrats are facing an uphill climb to net the four seats needed to flip the chamber, while Republicans only need to win a handful more competitive races to hold onto the majority. With more than a dozen House races still uncalled and many looking close, Democrats would need to hang onto all of their competitive seats and flip a few Republican-held seats to get to the 218 seats needed for the majority. With votes still being counted, here's a look at the key races that remain uncalled by the NBC News Decision De...

Louisiana’s Ten Commandments law in public schools temporarily blocked, federal judge orders

A coalition of parents attempting to block a state law that will require the Ten Commandments to be displayed in public school classrooms by next year have won a legal battle in federal court. An order issued Tuesday by U.S. District Judge John deGravelles grants the plaintiffs' request for a preliminary injunction, which means the state can't begin its plan to promote and create rules surrounding the law as soon as Friday while the litigation plays out. DeGravelles heard arguments on Oct. 21 over the controversial legislation, which makes Louisiana the first state in the nation to require all public K-12 schools and colleges to exhibit posters of the Ten Commandments, the religious text that was revealed to Moses in the Bible and remains revered by followers of the Chr...

Supreme Court rejects Mark Meadows’ appeal in Georgia election interference case

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Tuesday dealt a setback to former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows in his defense against 2020 election interference charges in Georgia, turning away his attempt to transfer his case from state to federal court. His lawyers argued that the case should be moved because he was acting as a “federal officer” at the time and could therefore argue for immunity from prosecution. The argument failed in lower courts, with the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals concluding that because Meadows is no longer a federal official, the provision that would allow the case to be moved to federal court does not apply to him. The appeals court also found that even if he was deemed to be a federal officer, "the events giving rise to this criminal action were not...

Netflix ad-supported tier has 70 million monthly users two years after launch

Netflix’s cheaper, ad-supported tier has reached 70 million global monthly active users two years after it was launched . The company said Tuesday more than 50% of its new sign-ups are for ad-supported plans in countries that offer the option. Netflix said it continues “to see positive momentum and growth across all areas of the business,” adding it has seen “steady progress across all countries’ member bases.” Netflix launched the option in November 2022 as one of its responses to a slowdown in subscriber growth. Recently, subscriber growth hasn’t been an issue. Last month Netflix reported it added 5.1 million subscribers during the third quarter, beating Wall Street estimates. In total, Netflix counts 282.7 million memberships across all of its pricing tie...

Loyal dog helped solve owner’s grisly murder as cousin jailed for life

A loyal dog that refused to leave his dead owner's side helped solve the case of her murder by allowing detectives to identify her body, prosecutors said. Mandy Rose Reynolds, 26, was shot before her body was “burned beyond recognition” in a field fire in Robinson, Texas. She was found by police on April 5, 2023, the McLennan County District Attorney’s Office said in a release. Her cousin, Derek Daigneault, 29, of Wichita, Kansas, was sentenced to life in prison on Nov. 7 for her murder following an investigation that spanned two states, according to the DA's office. And one of the keys to identifying Reynolds was her white-haired labradoodle, Titan. Police found Titan near her body, barking "frantically." He refused to leave the area and wouldn't allow police to capture...
