Chautauqua County, N.Y. – The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office announced that Correctional Officer Dawayne “Train” Vanderwork passed away in his sleep after a long battle with cancer.
“It is with heavy hearts that the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office announces the passing of Correctional Officer Dawayne Vanderwork. Dawayne passed away in his home with his family by his side after a long battle with cancer. Dawayne held many titles; son, brother, uncle, coach, friend and the most notable, a father to his daughter Lexi.
“Dawayne grew up in Jamestown, New York and is known throughout the community as “Train”, a nickname he earned while playing high school football for the Jamestown Red Raiders football team. Later in life, he would be referred to as Coach Train, as he joined the Jamestown Area Midget Football league and coached the Westside Panthers and later, high school football for more than ten years.
“Dawayne was a man of pure GRIT and the perseverance and resilience that he displayed throughout this struggle was truly admirable. HIs dedication to his daughter, his football team and his career never faltered throughout this fight. In his words, any adversity that came his way was always just a ‘minor setback.’ His positivity was infectious, and his perseverance was admirable.
Dawayne was the type of man willing to help anyone whether it was one of the young men he had coached in his many years as a coach, a co-worker who needed time off or help outside of work, or a friend in need. He often times put others needs in front of his own even during his battle and always wanted to know how others were and what they needed. A true friend to all that knew him, a caring man who would always help others, and a great father to his daughter. His impact on those in his community will be greatly missed.”
