The military unit said Sunday that five persons were missing after a fishing boat apparently capsized near Couverden Point, Alaska, and that the Coast Guard and a team of good samaritans were looking for them.
Around 12:10 a.m. on Sunday, the crew of the approximately 50-foot fishing boat Wind Walker put out a mayday call, stating that the vessel was overturning. However, the Coast Guard did not receive a response to its requests for additional information from the crew.
According to a news release, the Coast Guard searched the area where the fishing vessel was thought to have capsized using a 45-foot response boat from Station Juneau and an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter aircrew from Air Station Sitka.
Meanwhile, the Coast Guard said in the announcement, a ferry ship named AMHS Hubbard heard the transmission and offered to assist.
According to the announcement, two strobe lights and seven cold-water immersion suits have been found by responders in the search area thus far. The participants in the attempt are dealing with 6-foot seas, strong winds of up to 60 mph, and a lot of snow.
According to the Coast Guard, there were five passengers on board the Wind Walker, according to people familiar with the crew. However, that figure has not been verified and may alter in light of fresh data.
The fishing vessel started in the Icy Strait, off the southeast coast of Alaska, just south of Point Couverden.
