Congress gathers to certify Donald Trump s win four years after he inspired a riot
Exactly four years after he incited a mob to attack the Capitol in an unsuccessful attempt to thwart the certification of his 2020 election loss and maintain his hold on power, Congress is set to convene today amidst a citywide snow emergency declaration to certify President-elect Donald Trump’s 2024 victory.
Despite Trump’s failure to provide any proof that the election result was invalid, 147 Republicans voted in 2021 to overturn the outcome and discount electors for President Joe Biden.
Democrats do not intend to retaliate in kind this time. They plan to restore January 6 to its traditional status as a routine ceremony where the president-elect is sworn in without any fanfare. Vice President Kamala Harris, Trump’s opponent, has admitted defeat and is scheduled to oversee Trump’s certification today.
Measures are being taken to ensure that there won’t be another uprising. In 2022, a bill reforming the certification procedure was passed by a Democratic-controlled Congress in an effort to stop another insurgency-style incident and make it more difficult for future presidential candidates to rig elections. Jan. 6 has been designated as a national special security event, and Capitol Police and the Secret Service have erected temporary fencing around the Capitol for security.

Powerful winter storm threatens U.S. with heavy snow and crippling ice
A significant winter storm is predicted to bring snow, sleet, ice, and strong winds to regions along its route as it moves eastward from the Plains to the mid-Atlantic. Blizzard warnings are in effect through tonight for millions of people in regions of Kansas, Nebraska, and Missouri. The National Weather Service issued a warning of significant disruptions to daily life, including widespread closures and hazardous or impossible driving conditions. According to the weather service, the disturbance, which includes a lot of snow and ice from the central Plains to the mid-Atlantic, is caused by a low pressure system.
Major Northeastern cities, including Washington, D.C., Baltimore, and Philadelphia, are bracing for icy and snowy weather today. Parts of Virginia are predicted to receive 5 to 12 inches of snow. Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and other Southern states could be slammed by severe thunderstorms that have the potential to produce tornadoes and destructive winds.

Emilia P rez and Shogun earn four Golden Globes each; The Brutalist wins best drama film
The biggest small-screen winner of the evening was FX’s Sh Gun, a sprawling epic set in feudal Japan that won four prizes, including best TV drama series. Four Oscars were also won by Netflix’s genre-busting song-and-dance extravaganza Emilia Prez, which tells the story of a Mexican drug cartel lord who has gender reassignment surgery.
Three Oscars were won by A24’s epic narrative about the experience of postwar immigrants, The Brutalist, including best drama film and best actor for Adrien Brody. Additionally rewarded were the television programs Hacks and Baby Reindeer. Wicked took up the prize for both box office and cinematic excellence, while Flow was named the best animated film. With a decisive 31-9 victory over the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday Night Football, the Detroit Lions secured the NFC’s top seed, the NFC North championship, and a first-round playoff bye. In the victory, Detroit running back Jahmyr Gibbs ran for 139 yards and scored three touchdowns. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeated the New Orleans Saints 27–19 to win the AFC South. Mike Evans, who finished with nine receptions for 89 yards, gave them a strong effort. He tied the all-time great wide receiver Jerry Rice with his 11th consecutive season of 1,000 receiving yards or more.
With the No. 1 seed guaranteed, the Chiefs rested most of their starters, but the Denver Broncos defeated them 38-0 to advance to the playoffs. Bo Nix, a rookie quarterback, had an outstanding 321 yards of passing, four touchdowns, and no interceptions. He became the only quarterback in history to pass for at least 300 yards in multiple games, score four touchdowns, and have a passer rating of 140 or better.
The Miami Dolphins were crushed 32–20 by the New York Jets in what might have been Aaron Rodgers’ last game. Throwing four touchdowns for 503 regular-season touchdown passes in his career, he ended his career on a high note. Along with Brett Favre, Drew Brees, Peyton Manning, and Tom Brady, he became the fifth player in NFL history to record more than 500 touchdown passes during the regular season.
