Dolphins receiver Grant DuBose hospitalized overnight after head injury against Texans

Following a helmet-to-helmet collision during Sunday’s game against the Houston Texans, Miami Dolphins wide receiver Grant DuBose was admitted to the hospital overnight, the Dolphins announced Monday.

In the third quarter, DuBose tried to make a grab, but Texans rookie Calen Bullock struck him in the head before his head impacted the ground hard. NFL.com reports that following the collision, DuBose seemed to clench his fists, exhibiting the “fencing response,” a typical reaction following a traumatic brain injury. After then, he remained still for more than ten minutes as emergency medical staff rushed to treat him.

Before putting DuBose on a spine board with his arms and legs fastened down, they ripped off his jersey and fitted him with a neck brace. As he was brought off the field on a stretcher, he seemed to be still and had a tube in his mouth.

Bullock struck a helpless receiver on the play, earning him a flag for needless roughness.

DuBose spent the night at a nearby Houston hospital for assessment after being ruled out due to a head injury, the Dolphins announced Monday. Although his first tests showed encouraging results and he is mobile in all extremities, he is still being monitored by specialists.

The Dolphins appeared to be praying while kneeling in a circle while he was being treated on the field. While DuBose was still down, Houston head coach DeMeco Ryans and Miami head coach Mike McDaniel shared an embrace.

“I just feel bad that I even put him in that situation to have gotten hit,” Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa stated following the game during a press conference. “It was tough to move on, you know, after that happened.”

The Texans defeated the team 20–12.

After suffering a shoulder injury early in the season, DuBose played in his first game. Last season, he was selected in the seventh round.
