Dunkirk Traffic Stop Escalates into Collision with Semi-Truck, Driver Faces Multiple Charges

(WNY News Now) When a driver eluded police during a routine traffic stop in Dunkirk, the situation descended into mayhem, leading to a collision with a semi-truck and many felony charges.

DUNKIRK, NY On Thursday, January 2, 2025, at around 9:03 PM, a serious collision occurred as a result of a high-speed attempt to avoid police. The driver, identified as 26-year-old Christopher Cancel-Vazquez, refused to cooperate when Dunkirk police officers stopped him at Park Avenue and East 2nd Street in the City of Dunkirk.

Cancel-Vazquez ran a red light and collided with a northbound semi-truck as he sped through the junction of Main Street and East 2nd Street. Both cars sustained major damage in the collision, which also generated a huge diesel fuel spill.

Emergency personnel, such as the Chautauqua County Hazmat team and the Dunkirk Fire Department, arrived on time to handle the fuel cleanup and take both drivers to Brooks Hospital for treatment of their crash-related injuries.

Cancel-Vazquez is currently facing several charges, such as:

  • Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer Causing Injury (E Felony)
  • Reckless Endangerment in the Second Degree
  • Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle in the Second Degree
  • Reckless Driving
  • Failure to Obey a Police Officer
  • Additional traffic violations

Cancel-Vazquez had outstanding warrants from the Town of Evans Police Department and the Cheektowaga Police Department, according to additional research. Authorities said that as the investigation progresses, further charges might be brought.

The accused is deemed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, just like everyone else who is accused of a crime.
