Durhamville Fire Department Treasurer Charged with $92,000 Theft

(WNY News Now) The former treasurer of the Durhamville Fire Department was arrested after a seven-year conspiracy of alleged financial malfeasance shocked the department.

New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli and the New York State Police said Tuesday that Kimberly Simchik, a former treasurer of the Durhamville Fire Department, had been arrested for allegedly stealing more than $92,000 from the Department over a seven-year period.

According to DiNapoli, Ms. Simchik betrayed the confidence of her community by allegedly using Fire Department monies for her personal amusement. Fighting fraud and safeguarding public funds are top priorities for my office. I am grateful to my office and the New York State Police for working together to hold her responsible.

“Ms. Simchik’s arrest sends a clear message that alleged criminal behavior among those entrusted in their position will be thoroughly investigated,” stated New York State Police Superintendent Steven G. James. We will not stand for any unlawful financial activity, and I commend our members and our Comptroller’s Office colleagues for their efforts to bring those responsible accountable.

Simchik is accused of using Fire Department funds for personal expenses such as plane trips, a massage, and a nail salon, as well as a subscription to a movie channel. She also paid at nearby casinos using the Fire Department’s debit card.

When another member of the Fire Department tried to deposit money and was told by the bank that the account had been closed because of a negative balance, the theft was found. The New York State Police were then contacted by the Fire Department and collaborated with DiNapoli’s office to carry out a forensic analysis and inquiry. Since then, Simchik has left the Fire Department.
