Karla Sof a Gasc, star of “Emilia Prez,” apologized Thursday after her previous social media tweets that seemed to make comments about diversity at the Oscars, Muslims, and George Floyd were revived by online users.
In a statement released through Netflix, Gasc, the first openly trans actor to receive an Oscar nomination, stated, “I want to acknowledge the conversation around my past social media posts that have caused hurt.”
“As a member of a minority community, I am acutely aware of this suffering, and I sincerely apologize to everyone I have hurt. I’ve battled for a better world my entire life. “I am convinced that light will always prevail over darkness,” she continued.
After author Sarah Hagi posted screenshots of Gasc n’s alleged previous posts on X, which Google translated, criticism of Gasc n started on Thursday. Since then, the posts have been removed.
Prior to their removal, Gasc’s previous social media posts were not independently reviewed by NBC News. According to screenshots that have gone viral online, the Spanish-language posts were created in 2020 and 2021.
Hagi, who was the first to release the screenshots, remarked on X, “You really gotta laugh from the star of a movie that is campaigning on its progressive values.” You can say anything you want about Muslims and it’s never deemed racist, therefore things like this don’t get reported. Jacques Audiard’s film received nominations in several categories, including best picture, director, international feature film, supporting actress, and original score.
Since its Cannes Film Festival premiere last year, the movie has created a lot of hype. With four Golden Globes wins, including best motion picture musical or comedy, it has already made a major impression this awards season.
However, others have voiced their dissatisfaction with the movie’s portrayal of transgender individuals. The film, according to a November blog post by GLAAD, is a “step backward for trans representation.”
In an earlier interview with NBC News, Gasc discussed how she assisted Audiard in developing the film’s transgender plot.
