Washington A former FBI informant has been charged with tax offenses. The informant’s fraudulent allegations regarding President Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden were “the heart” of the Republican impeachment investigation into the president.
Ten different tax-related charges have now been brought against Alexander Smirnov, the former FBI informant who was accused of lying to the FBI regarding President Joe Biden and his son Hunter.
According to the new indictment, Smirnov earned over two million dollars in 2020, 2021, and 2022 from a variety of sources. He also purchased a Bentley, a $1.4 million condominium in Las Vegas, and hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of clothing, jewelry, and accessories for himself and his domestic partner from upscale stores in Las Vegas and Los Angeles.
According to his lawyers, Richard Schonfeld and David Chesnoff, Smirnov “intends to vigorously fight these allegations with the same intensity as he has fought the original indictment.”
David Weiss, special counsel on the Hunter Biden investigation, presented the charges against Smirnov, a confidential human source for the FBI since 2010. The charges led to convictions on gun charges in June and tax charges in September.
Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, stated that Smirnov’s allegations were “the heart” of the Republican investigation into the president’s impeachment prior to his indictment. Biden has refuted any misconduct.
According to federal prosecutors, Smirnov stated in February that he received some of his material from “officials associated with Russian intelligence.” “Actively peddling new lies that could impact U.S. elections after meeting with Russian intelligence officials” is what the prosecution claimed Smirnov was doing in November 2023. In a separate indictment released in September, Russia was accused of trying to support Trump’s campaign and even paying right-wing influencers.
A trial in Smirnov’s false statements lawsuit is now scheduled to begin on January 8, 2025, but U.S. District Judge Otis Wright also issued an order today.
