Federal food officials reclassified the targeted product to its highest risk level after raising concerns about recalled eggs sold from Costco shops due to potential salmonella infection.
New York-Handsome Brook Farms recalled roughly 10,800 retail units of 24-count organic, pasture-raised eggs sold under Costco’s Kirkland Signature brand, the FDA reported on Nov. 27.
The FDA elevated the recall to Class I in an updated notice released on Friday, citing a “reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.”
Starting on November 22, 25 Costco locations in Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee started selling the targeted egg cartons.
The Universal Product Code (UPC) for the “Organic Pasture Raised” eggs, which are offered in sets of 24, is 9661910680, and its expiration date is January 5, 2025.
The FDA advised customers who have the eggs to return them to Costco for a complete refund.
