(WNY News Now)Buffalo, New YorkThrough late tonight, Niagara and Northern Erie counties are under a Flood Watch, according to the Buffalo-based National Weather Service (NWS). Residents are warned that flooding might result from ice movement on Lake Erie and the Niagara River as well as rising water levels.
Potential Flooding from Ice Jams
Ice is being forced into the Niagara River from Lake Erie’s shoreline by a combination of strong southwesterly winds and rising water levels brought on by a lake seiche. Ice jams could form as a result of this movement, which could cause flooding in low-lying regions, especially on Grand Island and along the immediate lakeshore.
Areas at Risk
Western New York is affected by this alert, including:
-
Niagara County
-
Northern Erie County
Ice jams building downstream along the Niagara River and possible ice shoves onto Lake Erie’s shores are major worries.
Safety Instructions
People who live in flood-prone areas should keep an eye on updates and be ready to take immediate action if things get worse. Residents of the Niagara River or the immediate lakefront are encouraged to:
- Secure property in low-lying areas.
- Stay updated on local forecasts and alerts.
