Former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro accused of attempted coup after his 2022 election loss

Following his loss in the 2022 election, Brazil’s federal police nominated 37 individuals for prosecution, including attempted coup d’tat, including former president Jair Bolsonaro.

Bolsonaro and others are charged with violently overthrowing the Democratic state of law, coup d’tat, and constituting a criminal organization, according to a statement from Brazil’s federal police.

Nearly two years of conjecture regarding Bolsonaro’s involvement in the election-denying campaign that resulted in rioting by his supporters that swept through the city of Brasilia in January 2023, just one week after his competitor and current president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva took office, have come to a head with the release of the final police report. Many demonstrators claimed they intended to cause mayhem in order to support a military takeover.

According to investigators, some of the accused conspirators planned to kill Lula.

The prosecutor general’s office will determine whether to file charges against Bolsonaro and any former aides involved once police submit their report to Brazil’s Supreme Court.

Police listed senior members of Bolsonaro’s government, including retired General Augusto Heleno, national security adviser, and his 2022 running partner, retired General Walter Braga Netto, defense minister.

Bolsonaro fled Brazil just days before Lula’s inauguration, and he never acknowledged his electoral defeat in October 2022.

After supporters attacked and vandalized the Supreme Court, Congress, and the executive presidential palace, he returned to Brazil and turned over his passport to police who were looking into his involvement in the capital riots.
