Fort Mill, S.C. At Tuesday night’s school board meeting, Dr. Chuck Epps, the superintendent of the Fort Mill School District, announced his retirement, effective June 30, 2025. This announcement marks the end of an incredible 49-year career in education, 45 of which were spent with the Fort Mill School District.
Dr. Epps offered additional reflections and analysis on his choice in a letter that was included in the meeting minutes. “I find it hard to express the feelings I have as I declare my retirement,” Epps stated. My professional life has been a privilege to serve this district.
A teacher’s assistant, coach, teacher, assistant principal, principal, administrator, and, for the last 15 years, superintendent are just a few of the roles that Dr. Epps has had in the district. The district has almost doubled in size under his direction and is still regarded as one of the best-performing school systems in South Carolina. He has created a strong feeling of community and a family-oriented culture among staff, students, and families in spite of the school’s explosive development.
According to Epps, I have personally witnessed what can be achieved when a community unites behind a common goal for education. The remarkable individuals that comprise our school family are directly responsible for the Fort Mill School District’s success, which is based on a tradition of quality.
As a proud Fort Mill School District alumnus, Dr. Epps has been instrumental in determining the district’s achievements. Under his direction, an exceptional group of teachers and administrators was formed, many of whom have since made a big difference in other districts. Generations of pupils who have profited from his dedication to educational excellence bear witness to his legacy.
He also emphasized the district’s capacity to strike a balance between academic achievement and quick growth. He cited the recently approved Early Childhood Center as evidence of the community’s dedication to making sure every child has access to the resources they need to succeed, saying, “I am especially proud of our ability to sustain high levels of student achievement amid rapid expansion.”
In order to facilitate the transition for the incoming superintendent, Dr. Epps will continue to serve in a support capacity through December 2025. The next steps in choosing his replacement will be decided by the Fort Mill School Board; further information will be released as it becomes available.
Dr. Epps considered the connections he has made over the years as he gets ready to finish this chapter of his career. “Fort Mill is my family, not just a district,” he remarked. I sincerely hope and pray that the district’s next leader will continue Fort Mill’s very special culture of connection, teamwork, and unshakable commitment to our students.
Epps conveyed his appreciation for the chance to lead and serve the district for so long. I appreciate you letting me share in this amazing adventure. I will always be appreciative of the years I have spent here, as well as the experiences and friendships I have made that will last a lifetime.
