Free Hats, Mittens, and a Warming Center to Help Friendship Residents Brave the Cold

(WNY News Now) With a new warming center and free hat and mitten distributions, the What God is Doing in Friendship NY alliance of churches is stepping up to offer warmth and support as a harsh cold front approaches this week.

NY FRIENDSHIP Residents of the Friendship region will receive over six dozen free hats and mittens in a variety of sizes tomorrow in response to the bitterly cold weather that began this week.

The items will be made available by the What God is Doing in Friendship ny partnership of churches on January 20, the third Monday of the month, during the Mission Agape food pantry distribution at the Church of God in Christ, located at 77 West Main Street, from 3 to 5 p.m. The distribution of quantities will be restricted to one set per person.

CENTER As part of its 4th Annual Hat and Mitten Drive, the Learning Center of Belmont donated the products to the church outreach. Saputo Dairies of Friendship, Northern Light Candles, and LC Whitford of Wellsville made major donations as well.

In addition to Gill’s Hills children’s clubs and summer camps, the Salvation Army, Elmira Psychiatric Center for the homeless population, Women, Infants and Children (WIC), The Veterans Center/Clinic, First Step Family Resource Center, Salvation Army, and Trapping Brook halfway house in Wellsville, ACCORD in Belmont, Hillside children’s center in Cuba, and Operation Warm Hearts in Olean, hats and mittens were distributed during the Christmas season at Friendship, Genesee Valley, Belfast, Scio, and Wellsville Central Schools.

Additionally, the alliance is providing a warming center on demand from Monday through Wednesday, January 20–22, during the day at its Mission House facility, which is located in the former St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, offices, and rectory at 28–32 East Main Street.

Over the following three days, temperatures with wind chills below zero are predicted.

The former rectory has a sofa and chairs that look like they belong in a living room, as well as an office area with a table and chairs where anyone who bring laptops or tablets can use internet connection. Free food and snacks will also be offered during the relevant hours.
