Gaza death toll likely to be significantly higher than official figures, study finds

Researchers at a top British health university have discovered that the death toll from Israel’s murderous offensive in the Palestinian enclave in Gaza is much higher than the numbers given by local health officials.

Researchers at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine calculated that up to 64,260 individuals died in “traumatic injury deaths” in Gaza between October 7, 2023, and June 30, 2024, according to a peer-reviewed study published Thursday in The Lancetjournal.

According to the study’s authors, the number of people killed during the first nine months of the conflict was about 41% more than the 37,877 that the Palestinian health ministry reported.

Of the 28,257 deaths for whom age and sex statistics were available, 59.1% were related to women, children under the age of 18, and those over 65. The number of Palestinian combatants killed was not estimated by the researchers. Data about militants killed is also not released by Gaza’s health services.
