Giants release struggling quarterback Daniel Jones after signing him to $160 million deal

Quarterback Daniel Jones is being let go by the Giants, formally capping a dismal stint in New York that saw them make just one postseason appearance in six seasons.

According to the organization on Friday, the decision was made after Jones, who was demoted to the fourth string and officially benched this week, visited team authorities and requested the release.

“Daniel has been a great representative of our organization, first class in every way,” Giants president John Mara said on X.

“The way things have turned out has disappointed us all. Daniel is well respected and greatly appreciated by us. We want the best for him in the future.

For the first time since his benching was revealed, the quarterback spoke to the media Thursday.

But this is football at the end of the day. We’re in a business where outcomes are expected, and we weren’t meeting those expectations,” Jones stated.

With Jones guiding the squad, the Giants, who are 2-8 this season and will probably select a new quarterback in the draft next year, went 24-45-1.

Jones, a 2019 Duke University graduate drafted sixth overall, was probably being cut from the team over the offseason. Following his greatest season in 2022, when he guided the team to the playoffs, he got a four-year, $160 million contract deal.

However, he had a rough start to the season due to a neck ailment that kept him out several games. After Week 9, he tore his ACL in his right knee, ending his season. Since the organization would be able to free up up to $20 million for the salary cap of the next season, Jones, 27, was facing an offseason relocation.
