(WNY News Now) After saving a man’s life in Switzerland during a life-threatening incident, eight Girl Scouts from Western New York and one from Maryland are awarded the coveted Girl Scouts Medal of Honor.
The Girl Scouts of Western New York are pleased to report that eight of our outstanding Girl Scouts, as well as one from the Girl Scouts of Central Maryland, have been awarded the Medal of Honor, one of the highest accolades in Girl Scouting. While traveling overseas in Switzerland, these remarkable young people received recognition for their courage, quick thinking, and immediate action in a life-threatening situation.
Girl Scouts who have saved or attempted to save a life and displayed bravery beyond the call of duty for their age and training are granted the Medal of Honor. These young leaders exemplified the Girl Scout Promise and Law by displaying great bravery and collaboration.

The valiant incident happened close to the Girl Scout World Center, Our Chalet, at the top of Vogilisiberg in Adelboden, Switzerland. On one of their free days, the gang came upon a man who was having a heart attack. Together with their Leaders, the girls, who had all had Girl Scout training in CPR and First Aid, jumped right in. The team managed to get an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), contact emergency personnel, and help save the man’s life despite the difficulties of their remote location and language hurdles. The favorable result was largely due to their readiness, tenacity, and composure under duress.
The Girl Scouts of Western New York’s CEO said:
These Girl Scouts have profoundly demonstrated what it means to be resourceful, prepared, and caring. Their deeds make us all immensely proud and embody the best principles of the Girl Scout Movement. They are a tribute to the transformative experiences and abilities acquired through Girl Scouting and serve as genuine role models for their peers.
The Girl Scout uniform proudly displays the Medal of Honor pin, a distinguished emblem of this achievement that honors the bravery and heroism these young leaders embody.
