A source familiar with the situation told NBC News that a hacker on Monday obtained a file that contained the sworn depositions of two women who were part of the probe into Matt Gaetz, the former congressman from Florida who is President-elect Donald Trump’s choice to head the Justice Department.
The source claims that the testimony in that file, which includes the evidence of two women who claimed to have witnessed the encounter and the testimony of the lady who claims to have had sex with Gaetz in 2017 when she was 17 years old, is unredacted.
John Clune, the lawyer for the lady who claims she had sex with Gaetz when she was 17, told NBC News: Another legal firm notified us last night that a shared file containing several private documents was read by an unauthorized person.
The Justice Department looked into Gaetz in connection with a case concerning the alleged sex trafficking of a 17-year-old girl. Gaetz has never faced criminal charges and has consistently refuted those accusations.
Gaetz’s resignation from Congress this week, following his appointment as President-elect Donald Trump’s choice for Attorney General, effectively put a stop to that investigation.
The source claims that an individual going by the name Altam Breezley downloaded the file from a secure link.
According to the insider, the hacker obtained hundreds of pages of further related paperwork that is under seal in the file.
The New York Times was the first to report on the hacking. The identities of the women who are alleging Gaetz are not being reported by NBC News.
It’s unclear right now whether law enforcement is looking into the situation or whether any of the compromised data has been made public. An NBC News request for comment was not immediately answered by a Gaetz spokeswoman.
According to a source with knowledge of the files’ contents, Gaetz was harmed by their extensive detail.
