Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, and Hamas military director Mohammed Deif were all given arrest warrants by the International Criminal Court on Thursday for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Announcing that it has issued warrants for both Netanyahu and Gallant, whom the Israeli prime minister sacked last month, in connection with the nation’s attack on the Gaza Strip, the Pre-Trial Chamber of the international court dismissed Israel’s claims to its jurisdiction.
This happened as local officials said that 44,000 people had died in the Palestinian enclave, including thousands of children.
Israel began its lethal offensive after the terror attacks on October 7, which were led by Hamas and resulted in a significant escalation in the decades-long conflict. According to Israeli sources, over 1,200 people were killed and 250 more were taken prisoner.
Israel has characterized Khan as a rogue prosecutor who is trying to discredit the sole Jewish state and has repeatedly dismissed claims of war crimes in Gaza. In the past, it has urged its partners to refrain from enforcing any arrest warrants.
Netanyahu’s office has been contacted by NBC News for comment.
Although they put Israeli officials at risk of being arrested in other nations, including much of Europe, neither Israel nor the US acknowledge the court’s jurisdiction.
