An Indian American family intends to file a complaint against the woman who dubbed them non-American after they were subjected to a racist tirade and verbal abuse on a United Airlines shuttle bus.
The 50-year-old Pervez Taufiq was flying from Mexico to Los Angeles with his wife and three small children when he claims a woman harassed him, demanding his children to stop talking and then using racist epithets against them when he retaliated. Social media users are furious with the attacker after Taufiq’s video of the Nov. 23 assault went viral.
Taufiq told NBC News that the lack of guilt and contrition was the most disheartening thing.
Although Taufiq did not immediately report the incident to the authorities, he stated that he has been informed of the attacker’s identify and plans to bring charges.
In an interview with Fox 11 in Los Angeles on Tuesday, a woman acknowledged the event and claimed that Taufiq and his wife had provoked her. She requested that the outlet not identify her.
Taufiq expressed sympathy for her, but he didn’t get the impression from her answers that she was sorry. He wants to make it obvious that her behavior was unacceptable, so he intends to begin the process of filing charges, he said. It’s unclear if the woman will face criminal charges from the police.
According to Taufiq, the harassment started when she asked his 11-year-old son, who was seated apart from the family, about his race on the flight from Mexico. Video shows woman giving the family the finger and calling them greasy and stinking while on the shuttle vehicle from the plane to Los Angeles International Airport.
In the video, she said, “Your family is from India, and you have no rules or respect.” Then, while disparagingly referring to him as “tandoori,” she pulled for her phone and declared she was going to videotape.
The woman attributed her actions to a prior brain damage in the Fox 11 interview.
She claimed that although most people know me as a calm, caring person, I am quickly irritated due to my brain injury.
Additionally, she said that Taufiq had used a disparaging word for white people to verbally abuse her initially.
Taufiq claims he told her to stop talking when she yelled at his 4-year-old kid, but he denies using any offensive language.
“Seeing their dad lay down is the one thing I don’t want my kids to do,” he remarked.
