An Indian village named after the former U.S. president honors his visit over 50 years ago, thousands of miles away from Washington, where Jimmy Carter’s funeral is scheduled for next week.
Carter, a 1977 one-term president who passed away on Sunday, the 100th day of the year, will have a state funeral Thursday at the Washington National Cathedral.
About 20 miles outside of Delhi is the dusty village known as Carterpuri, or the Village of Carter. When Carter’s mother, Lillian, lived and worked there for a short time in the 1960s as a volunteer and nurse, it was known as Daulatpur Nasirabad.
His wife was clothed traditionally by the villagers. Moti Ram, a local, recalls the occasion when Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, strolled through the town. He also tried out a hookah.
Some people told news agency ANI, in which Reuters holds a minority investment, that preparations had been prepared months before the visit on January 3, 1978. The community was cleaned up, and its central plaza hosted welcome events.
The villagers were so moved by Carter’s visit that they renamed their village after him.
