According to a school official Wednesday, Jason Kelce, a former offensive lineman for the Philadelphia Eagles, will not face charges related to an argument outside Beaver Stadium at Penn State University last month in which he appeared to smash someone’s cellphone.
The argument, which was apparently started by a fan using a derogatory term against his brother, happened in Happy Valley on November 2 while Kelce, whose younger brother is Travis Kelce, a tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs, was at the Penn State-Ohio State game.
NBC News confirmed social media footage that showed the elder Kelce strolling outside the stadium with a case of beer in hand, surrounded by supporters.
In reference to Travis Kelce’s relationship with pop singer Taylor Swift, a man could be heard shouting at Kelce in the background before describing Kelce’s brother with a homophobic slur.
Kelce then seemed to turn around, take the man’s phone, smash it to the ground, pick it up again, and leave, according to the footage.
The individual looked to be pursuing Kelce and requesting the return of his phone from a different perspective. Kelce seems to repeat the slur back to the individual in the video.
In an email on Wednesday, Penn State spokesperson Jacqueline Sheader stated that the school’s public safety and police department had concluded the case.
According to Sheader, no one has reported the damage to personal property to University Police, and the person in the video clip that is making the rounds on social media has not been recognized.
Following the altercation last month, Kelce expressed regret on ESPN’s “Monday Night Countdown.”
You see, I’m not pleased with anything that happened. He said, “I’m not proud of it.” And I decided to respond to hate with hate during a heated moment. And that simply doesn’t seem like a productive thing to me. Actually, I don’t.
Since retiring at the end of the previous season, Kelce has made appearances as an ESPN pundit. He attended the game as part of College GameDay on the network.
On Wednesday night, ESPN was not immediately contacted for comment.
