Jimmy Carter dies at 100
The 39th president of the United States, Jimmy Carter, passed away at the age of 100. Carter was an advocate for human rights and a worldwide peacemaker.
He is a Democrat from Georgia who was elected president in 1976 and held office for one term before losing reelection due to his failure to resolve the hostage situation in Iran. Carter received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 in recognition of his global human rights efforts. He was the first president to live to be 100 years old and the longest-living former president in American history.
Since February 2023, Carter and his wife of 77 years, Rosalynn Carter, had been in hospice care at their Plains, Georgia, home. On November 19, 2023, the 96-year-old former first lady passed away.

179 people killed in plane crash at South Korea airport
Only two people survived the year’s deadliest plane catastrophe, which claimed 179 lives.
The catastrophic series of events at South Korea’s Muan International Airport is thought to have been initiated by a bird attack while a Boeing 737-800 Jeju Air flight from Bangkok was attempting to land.
Before colliding with a wall and catching fire, the aircraft struck a building, failed to drop its landing gear, and skidded across the runway.
Of the 181 passengers, all but two perished; two members of the cabin crew were rescued alive from the wreckage’s tail end.
The flight data recorder and the cockpit voice recorders, which are crucial for shedding light on the final seconds of the deadly landing, have both been recovered by investigators.
Dozens of tornadoes rip through the South
As a storm system focused on the South moved eastward on Sunday, more than 20 million people were at risk of severe weather conditions.
At least four people have died as a result of numerous tornadoes and destructive storms that have struck the South in recent days.
Experts say the tornado outbreaks in 2024 stand out in a year of extraordinary weather. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the United States had 1,762 tornadoes from January to November, the most in ten years.
Among the most expensive weather and climate disasters in the nation this year were tornado outbreaks. NOAA reported 24 weather disasters with a combined damage total of at least $1 billion as of Nov. 1.
Putin’s apology to Azerbaijan
The Kremlin stated Saturday that Russian President Vladimir Putin had apologized to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev for the 38-person civilian airplane disaster.
Putin refrained from taking accountability. He made no mention of whether the plane was struck by Russian air defenses. According to the Kremlin, military and civilian experts were being questioned as part of an ongoing probe.
Russian missiles may have struck the aircraft, according to two U.S. military sources who spoke to NBC News on Friday. They said they had information suggesting that the Russians might have mistaken the aircraft for a drone and shot it down.
On Sunday, Aliyev claimed that Russia had accidentally shot down the aircraft and accused Moscow of attempting to “hush up” the matter for days.
Trump steps into simmering MAGA feud
President-elect Donald Trump is commenting on a dispute over temporary labor permits that is separating MAGA factions.
In an interview with the New York Post, Trump stated that he has “been a believer” in the H-1B program, which permits firms to temporarily employ non-U.S. citizens for highly skilled professions. Trump’s remarks align him with Vivek Ramaswamy and Elon Musk, who have maintained that the visa program is advantageous to the nation.
Regarding the program, Musk in particular has been at odds with other Trump supporters, even stating that “those contemptible fools must be removed from the Republican Party.” That he was talking about was later explained as “those in the Republican Party who are hateful, unrepentant racists.”
Musk has also been accused of suppressing conservatives who have been outspoken in their criticism of his views. In recent days, a number of accounts reported that X had canceled their blue verification badges.
Israeli forces detain director of Gaza hospital
After Israeli soldiers forcibly evacuated patients and personnel while fires raged throughout the hospital, Gaza’s Health Ministry announced on Saturday that Israel had imprisoned the director of one of the last operational hospitals in Gaza.
The ministry reported that Israeli Defense Forces attacked the hospital on Friday, forcing staff and patients to evacuate and arresting scores while military vehicles surrounded the site.
The hospital was referred to as a Hamas bastion by Israel’s Foreign Affairs Ministry, which also claimed to have helped civilians safely leave the facility prior to the strike.
According to military spokeswoman Nadav Shoshani, the fire that ripped through multiple hospital units on Friday had nothing to do with the IDF’s actions.
