Former President Jimmy Carter continues to receive tributes. The deadliest jet disaster in South Korea is still being investigated. Additionally, the Washington Commanders secure a postseason berth.
What to know today is as follows.
Jimmy Carter dies at 100
According to his office, former President Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States, has away. He devoted his life after leaving office to promoting world peace. He was 100 years old.
The longest-living former US president was Carter.
He became the first former commander in chief to reach the century mark, and he passed away over three months later. Since February 2023, Carter has been under hospice care at his Plains, Georgia, home, where he and his 77-year wife, Rosalynn Carter, reside. On Nov. 19, 2023, the former first lady passed away at the age of 96.
After the Watergate crisis, Carter, a Democrat and native of Georgia, defeated incumbent Republican Gerald Ford to win the presidency in 1976. After serving one term, Carter lost to Ronald Reagan in 1980. His unsuccessful attempt to win reelection was hampered by his inability to end the 444-day Iran hostage crisis.
American and international leaders have been expressing their condolences. In a national address, President Joe Biden expressed his sorrow over Carter’s passing. Biden claimed that he and his wife, first lady Jill Biden, had lost a close friend and referred to Carter as a statesman and humanitarian. While Carter survived a cancer diagnosis, Biden, who lost his son Beau to brain cancer in 2015, claimed the illness had forged a relationship between the two leaders.
During his administration, Carter oversaw the momentous Camp David Accords, the peace agreement between Israel and Egypt, and later promoted democracy and affordable housing. U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer praised Carter’s humanitarian attitude. Other international leaders commended Carter for advancing human rights and peace, while French President Emmanuel Macron admired him for speaking for those who don’t have a voice.
With the Carter Center, which he and the former first lady founded in 1982, Carter, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his work on human rights around the world, dedicated his post-presidential years to advancing democracy, human rights, and social justice as well as peaceful conflict resolution. Through the center, the Carters visited developing nations to oversee elections, support the establishment of democratic institutions, advocate for those harmed by human rights violations, and lead the struggle to end diseases.

Investigators probe cause of deadly South Korean plane crash
An airplane belly-landed at Muan International Airport yesterday, killing 179 people in the deadliest aviation crash in South Korea’s history. A thorough investigation is currently ongoing. There are still questions about what specifically caused the disaster and why there were just two survivors and such a high death toll.
The plane was shown going down the runway after landing without landing gear, colliding with a wall, and exploding in flames on the crash’s video. Although the specific cause of the crash is still unknown, the pilot declared mayday soon after delivering a bird attack warning. Both the flight data recorder and the cockpit voice recorder were recovered by investigators, and they will be crucial in shedding light on the final moments of the aircraft.
At least four people are dead as storms and tornadoes wreak havoc in the South
Over the weekend, a storm system that produced many tornadoes wrecked devastation on the South, killing four people. In Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia, the storms caused over two dozen tornadoes, both preliminary and confirmed, and left behind structural damage. According to Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, 180 resources, including search and rescue teams, and more than 300 responders have been sent in to assist in the state’s hurricane response.
Cold air clashing with uncommon December warmth is one factor contributing to the extraordinary weather weekend.
Highlights from Week 17 of the NFL
On Sunday Night Football, the Washington Commanders defeated the Atlanta Falcons 30–24 in overtime to secure a postseason berth. Rohan Nadkarni, a sports correspondent for NBC News, breaks out the highlights:
With 24 of 36 throws for 227 yards and three touchdowns, including the game-winning score in the extra session, rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels maintained his incredible season for the Commanders. Daniels gained 127 yards as well. As regulation time ran out, the Falcons, who were starting Michael Penix Jr., another rookie, missed a field goal that could have won the game. In the NFC South, Atlanta now trails the Tampa Bay Buccaneers by one game. To qualify for the playoffs, the Falcons must now win and the Bucs must lose in Week 18.
In Week 18, the Minnesota Vikings defeated the Green Bay Packers 27–25, securing a spot in the NFC North championship game. In the victory, quarterback Sam Darnold threw for 377 yards and three touchdowns. The win put the Vikings at 14-2, giving them a shot at the No. 1 spot in the NFC and a division title. The Vikings will receive the top seed in both the division and the conference if Minnesota defeats the Detroit Lions in the team’s season finale. One of the clubs will earn a Wild Card position and travel to start the postseason if they lose.
Without starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, the Miami Dolphins defeated the Cleveland Browns 20-3 to maintain their postseason aspirations. Tagovailoa missed time due to a hip issue, thus Tyler Huntley filled in. The Dolphins have a 6-2 record in their last eight games after a 2–6 start to the season. In order to qualify for the postseason, Miami still needs to win in Week 18 and for the Kansas City Chiefs to defeat the Denver Broncos. However, after Tagovailoa’s early-season concussion almost ended the season, the Dolphins have given themselves a shot.
In a thrilling game that cost both sides a lot of money, the New York Giants defeated the Indianapolis Colts 45–33. Surprisingly, the Colts lost a game in which they were greatly favored, and as a result, were eliminated from the playoffs. However, there were drawbacks for the Giants as well. New York dropped to third place in the current selection order after controlling the first pick in the April NFL selection. The New England Patriots are now in charge of their own fate because a defeat the following week will guarantee them the #1 choice. New York, which is expected to be looking for its future quarterback in the draft, may come to regret Sunday s win when the team potentially has to settle for its second option.

The Zynternet, the manosphere, and salt are all present. Then there are the dudebros and the Barstool conservatives.
