Just off the set of the popular film Wicked, Jon M. Chu revealed information on the possible Crazy Rich Asians sequel.
Additionally, it might not be what supporters had hoped for.
Chu, the filmmaker, told Deadline last week that he wouldn’t bring everyone back unless it was worth it. For everyone, the stakes are too high.
The development of a follow-up to the love film Crazy Rich Asians started shortly after its 2018 premiere. Crazy Rich Asians was the first big studio film to have an all-Asian cast in 25 years, and it made $35 million in five days after its premiere.
Several Asian American actors, such as Constance Wu, Awkwafina, Henry Golding, and Gemma Chan, rose to fame thanks to Crazy Rich Asians.
During the “Wicked” media tour, Chu also stated to The Hollywood Reporter: “Crazy Rich Asians 2 is the subject of many inquiries. I always assured the actors that I would not bring them back unless we had a better script with the same level of urgency as the first film. And I believe that we haven’t reached that point yet.”
The film is based on Kevin Kwan’s 2013 book of the same name, which centers on Wu’s character Rachel, a Chinese American professor, and her lover Nick (Golding), as they visit Singapore.
Nick’s family is among the wealthiest in Singapore, which surprises Rachel. The trilogy continues with Rachel and Nick in books two and three, which are named China Rich Girlfriend and Rich People Problems, respectively.
In my opinion, the Broadway musical that we are currently working on is the sequel. It’s really thrilling and enjoyable,” Chu told Deadline.
Chu will make his Broadway debut in the Crazy Rich Asians musical, which Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures said was in the works in April.
The new musical, according to a press release, is an entertaining, captivating, and humorous look at what may happen when youthful love and old money combine.
