The father of JonBen Ramsey, who said on Thursday that he welcomed the fresh pop culture spotlight on the nearly 28-year-old murder, still holds out hope that his daughter’s killer will be apprehended.
According to 80-year-old John Ramsey, police in Boulder, Colorado, can use new DNA technology to investigate the murder that attracted international notice around Christmas 1996.
Ramsey said, “So we want to keep the case alive and in front of people,” on the “TODAY” program on NBC. “If the cops accept assistance from outside their system, I think it can be resolved. For twenty-five years, that has been the fault.
Ramsey appeared on “TODAY” alongside Joe Berlinger, the director of Cold Case: Who Killed JonBen T. Ramsey, a Netflix documentary series that premieres next week.
According to Berlinger, Gen Z and younger Millennials may not be as familiar with the Ramsey murder case as Gen X and Baby Boomers are.
“There’s a whole new generation of true crime fans that have rediscovered the story, going down these rabbit holes on Reddit and message boards, continuing to blame the family, continuing to spin conspiracy theories,” Berlinger stated. “I therefore felt compelled to correct the record. It’s an extremely lucid analysis of how evident it is that this was an intruder.
Ramsey stated that there is a net advantage to fresh perspectives on this unsolved murder that has enthralled a large portion of the country for almost thirty years, even though renewed attention to his child’s death can also lead to conspiracy theories.
Ramsey remarked, “It’s a double edged sword,” “We’re grateful that the public, and frankly, the world, cares about the murder of our child.”
“Even after 28 years, memories can still be jogged to create a case-cracking tip,” Ramsey said.
“Hopefully there’s someone who knows something that would come forward,” he stated.
Early on the morning of December 26, 1996, JonBen T, the teenage beauty queen, was discovered dead in the Boulder basement of the family’s house. Since then, the identity of the person who strangled the infant has remained a mystery.
For a long time, Ramsey has accused Boulder police of not embracing outside law enforcement assistance. However, the parent stated that he has visited with Steve Redfearn, the recently appointed Boulder Police Chief, and he is certain that the department will welcome any outside help.
In a statement to NBC News, Redfearn said, “The murder of JonBenet was an unimaginable crime, and this tragedy has never left our hearts.”
Until this terrible case is resolved, we are determined to pursue every lead and will keep collaborating with DNA specialists and our law enforcement colleagues nationwide. The Boulder Police Department will continue to prioritize this investigation.
According to John Ramsey, whose wife Patsy passed away from ovarian cancer in 2006, his family members have been unfairly accused for almost thirty years.
“My children and grandchildren are the reason I’m doing this. He declared, “This cloud over our family’s name needs to be lifted.” “They need to be able to go on and close this chapter and go on with their lives.”
