Lithium Battery Sparks Fire in Portland

(WNY News Now) A structure fire in the Town of Portland has been attributed to an overheated lithium-ion battery pack, which caused little damage and no injuries.

PORTLAND, NEW YORK Several fire companies were called to a reported structure fire at 6996 Route 5 in the Town of Portland on December 4, 2024, at around 2:28 p.m. To put out the fire, crews rushed to the spot.

The Chautauqua County incident Investigation Team arrived around 3:00 p.m. to determine the cause and origin of the incident. Investigators determined that an overheated lithium-ion battery pack was the cause of the unintentional fire. Due to prompt firefighting operations, the damage was minor since the fire was contained to its original region.

Firefighters’ prompt action stopped the situation from getting worse, and no injuries were reported. In order to lower risks, authorities continue to warn the public about the possible dangers of lithium-ion batteries and to recommend safe charging and storage procedures.
