Lost Hunter Rescued in Chautauqua County Woods After Three-Hour Search

(WNY News Now) Deputies, a K9 team, and local fire departments responded quickly to safely retrieve a lost Pennsylvania hunter in Westfield’s wintry woods.

Westfield, New York After becoming lost while pursuing a deer in the untamed, snow-covered woods off Lyons Road in the Town of Westfield, a Pennsylvania man was rescued late Friday night.

Just before his cell phone died, the hunter called a family member with his coordinates, and the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office arrived on the scene at 7:34 p.m. There were worries about the 45-year-old hunter’s safety in the frigid weather because he was far into the woods with poor cell reception and little visibility.

K9 Bentley was instrumental in helping deputies locate the man as they swiftly deployed and braved the difficult terrain. To aid with the search, the North Lake Fire District sent out their all-terrain ARGO vehicle.

The hunter was located at 9:45 p.m. and was safely led out of the woods by 10:36 p.m. Aside from weariness, he was unharmed when the Sherman Fire Department assessed him by the side of the road.
