Magic can’t save ‘Harry Potter’ star Rupert Grint from a $2.3 million tax bill

After losing a legal struggle with the tax authorities, Rupert Grint, a former Harry Potter star, is confronted with a $2.3 million penalty.

After the U.K. tax office, H.M. Revenue and Customs, looked into Grint’s tax return from seven years prior, the actor, who portrayed Ron Weasley in the magical movie franchise, was forced to pay the money in 2019.

According to the agency, Grint misclassified $5.7 million in residuals from the film—money from streaming rights, TV syndication, DVD sales, and other sources—as a capital asset rather than income, which is taxed at a far higher rate.

After years of squabbling, a tribunal judge decided against Grint this week despite the actor’s lawyers’ appeal. According to Judge Harriet Morgan, the funds were largely acquired from Mr. Grint’s efforts and are subject to income tax.

Grint, 36, played the boy wizard’s best friend in all eight of the Harry Potter movies from 2001 to 2011, earning an estimated $30 million for the role.

In 2019, he lost a different legal battle for a tax refund of $1.2 million.
