According to federal officials, a guy who was charged with murder in connection with the death of a lady who was set on fire in a New York subway car was in the country illegally and had already been deported.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials reported that New York police arrested 33-year-old Sebastian Zapeta-Calil, a Guatemalan national, in connection with the attack on Sunday.
He arrived in Sonoita, Arizona, on June 1, 2018, was deported from the United States, and was sent back to Guatemala on June 7, 2018, according to ICE.
ICE says it does not know where or when Zapeta-Calil illegally returned to the country.
According to the NYPD, the Brooklyn resident was charged on Monday with first-degree murder, second-degree murder, and first-degree arson in connection with the subway fatality.
On Monday afternoon, it was unclear if Zapeta-Calil had a lawyer.
After the criminal case against Zapeta-Calil is over, federal officials said they will submit a request to have him turned over to ICE. He might be deported as a result of the immigration detainer.
An unidentified woman was asleep on a halted F train at the Stillwell Avenue Subway Station at around 7:30 a.m. on Sunday when a guy set her on fire with a lighter, according to authorities.
The guy sat on a platform bench after exiting the subway, and a wanted flier released clear images of him taken by an officer’s body camera, according to New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch.
The responding police’ body-worn cameras provided a very clear, comprehensive view of the murderer, she claimed, and they were unaware that the suspect had remained on the scene, sitting on a bench on the platform, just outside the train car.
According to Tisch, the man approached the victim calmly and ignited the victim’s clothing with what we assume was a lighter.
At the scene, the woman was pronounced deceased.
