According to authorities, a man was shot and killed by police on Saturday after he drove into a mall in Texas and injured several people.
According to Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Bryan Washko, who spoke at a news conference on Saturday night, the man crashed into the front of a JC Penney store at the Killeen Mall in Killen, smashing the glass doors and continuing to drive his black pickup for approximately 100 yards while hitting several people and actively running them over.
The suspect was subsequently shot dead by police when they opened fire. Washko stated that the Texas Rangers are looking into the police shooting and that the community is no longer in danger.
According to Washko, four individuals with injuries ranging from serious to minor were sent to nearby hospitals. He also mentioned that another victim of the tragedy entered a hospital with only minor wounds.
Other than the suspect, no fatalities have been reported. According to Washko, the injured are between the ages of six and seventy-five.
Washko emphasized that, contrary to what was first claimed and disseminated on social media, there was not an active shooter at the mall. Earlier on Saturday, Killeen police also refuted the Facebook rumor.
At approximately 5 p.m., police received a report of a potentially drunk motorist on the highway, and they began pursuing the individual, according to Washko. Before entering the Killeen Mall, the motorist pulled off Interstate 14 and into the parking lot.
Police were seen gathering at the retail mall on the scene’s video.
To allow first responders access and investigators to look into the incident’s nature, police advised the public to stay away from the area.
The city of Killeen is located roughly 67 miles north of Austin. According to its website, Killeen Mall boasts over 90 stores.
