Manischewitz to sponsor first Jewish BYU quarterback in program history

The kosher food business Manischewitz revealed on Thursday that Jake Retzlaff, the first Jewish quarterback in the history of the program, has signed a NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) sponsorship deal with the team.

At Latter-day Saints University, Retzlaff, who has taken on the moniker BYJew, is one of just three Jewish students.

Retzlaff, a junior who was selected as the starting quarterback prior to the season, has guided the Cougars to a 10-2 record and a national ranking of No. 18. He has thrown for 2,796 yards, 20 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

Established in 1888, Manischewitz produces kosher goods such as wine, macaroons, and matzo.

“The recognizable Jewish brand has always been a part of my life,” Retzlaff added.

“My favorite snack as a child was matzo with peanut butter, and every Passover, my family and I made matzo pizza together,” he stated in a press release. Our custom during Chanukah was to prepare potato latkes. I can now share these customs with my teammates at BYU. Beyond just football, this cooperation is about fostering relationships and honoring Jewish pride in unexpected ways.

Retzlaff uses a box of matzo to practice football drills in a widely shared video that announced the relationship.

Manischewitz announced that it will create limited-edition Jake Retzlaff Matzo Boxes to honor the union of cultural heritage and sports success. Additionally, Retzlaff will use social media videos to tell his tale and explain his relationship to Manischewitz.

“This holiday season, we are thrilled to formally welcome Jake into the Manischewitz family,” said Shani Seidman, chief marketing officer at Kayco, Manischewitz’s parent company. We are proud to support his thrilling football career and dream because he is such an inspiration. This collaboration embodies the brand’s goals of honoring our heritage and raising awareness of Jewish cuisine and quality.
