Maps: See how large the California wildfires are

In the Los Angeles area, a number of large wildfires are causing death and destruction.

Due to strong winds and dry circumstances, a few wildfires that began on January 7 have grown significantly in size. By Wednesday afternoon, almost 12,000 buildings and structures had been demolished, and 25 people had been killed. There are warnings and evacuation orders for almost 160,000 people.

The Palisades Fire, the biggest of the fires, covers an area of about 37 square miles. That is more than half of Washington, D.C.’s total land area. The Eaton Fire, a second fire, has spread to cover more than 22 square kilometers.

Thousands of buildings within the Palisades Fire’s perimeter are in danger.

In just a few hours on January 7, the Palisades Fire more than doubled in size.

Power interruptions have been caused by the fires around the Los Angeles region. According to PowerOutage.us, as of Wednesday afternoon, over 65,000 consumers in Ventura and Los Angeles counties, California, were without power.
