The NFL doubleheader on Netflix on Wednesday was infused with the spirit of the holidays by the Queen of Christmas.
The streaming behemoth’s Christmas game day broadcasts began with Mariah Carey performing a taped version of “All I Want for Christmas Is You.”
The artist is seen on a rooftop decorated with Christmas trees and fake snow, wearing a red festive dress that is encrusted with glitter. Some VIPs from the North Pole, including Santa Claus and a few elves, join her while she sings and dance around her. The section featured groups of individuals watching Netflix from home and a montage of video from previous games.
The performance was also published by the streaming behemoth on X, where it said, “ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS A MARIAH CAREY KICKOFF.”
At the age of 22, Carey wrote the song in 1994. In addition to selling over 3 million copies in the US the year it was released, the album went triple platinum and has since sold at least 6 million additional copies or album equivalents. Even though its listenership has decreased, the Christmas classic is still quite popular, especially around this time of year.
The Kansas City Chiefs against. Pittsburgh Steelers and the Baltimore Ravens vs. Houston Texans are the two teams featured in Netflix’s inaugural NFL broadcast, which is produced by CBS Sports.
Beyonc is scheduled to perform during the second game of the day at halftime as well.
With its increased focus on live event content, Netflix is putting the games to the test. The streaming behemoth has already revealed a number of other high-profile live events for the future, including as the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2027 and 2031 and weekly World Wrestling Entertainment Raw shows that will begin streaming in less than two weeks.
Both Carey’s and Beyonc’s appearances were widely hyped by Netflix prior to the Christmas games.
In a teaser video released prior to the game, Carey stated, “I’ll be there too, and the NFL is live on Netflix.”
In the meantime, Beyonc seemed to make light of Netflix’s streaming problems at past live events in a teaser video that was uploaded on X on Tuesday. After that, the Netflix X account momentarily modified its bio to read: Beyonc roasted 12.24.24
